1871 Census-BIRKIN-COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 11 March 06 16:59 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone please look up HENRY STROVER BIRKIN on 1871 census -he would be just a few months old? His birth was registered Mar qtr 1871 Watford herts
Iam interested in all other members of the household.
He may be with his mother HANNAH BIRKIN b. abt 1848- she gives her p.o.b. as Soho on 1881 census and was then married to ROBERT HENRY BACON and living in Middlesex.
HENRY STROVER BIRKIN may be with his mother on 1871 - I believe he was illegitimate.

Thank you

Hi Suz,

The IGI records the christening of Harry Strover Birkin at Bushey on 25 June 1871.    Parents Allan Starr Birkin and Hannah Robinson.

I will check this with parish records when I next visit HALS.

Hi Suz,

FreeBMD contains an entry for the registration of the birth of Hannah Robinson in the March quarter 1848, Strand District, Vol.1. P.395.

Thank you so much for going the extra mile! This is so interesting.
Hannah had 2 children MABEL STROVER BIRKIN b.abt 1869 Kentish Town-I cannot find a birth reg -only marriage Dec  1904 Islington-only other trace of her is on 1871 census (thanks to you) and HARRY STROVER BIRKIN  b.1871-I have him on other census and marriage. They were "supposedly" the children of ALLEN STARR BIRKIN -who died age 27 Jun qtr 1871 Watford dist.
It seems by the christening record that ALLEN and HANNAH were not married - I cannot find a marriage for them-but maybe HARRY STROVER BIRKIN was baptised after /near to ALLENS death.
HANNAH BIRKIN m ROBERT HENRY BACON Sept qtr 1877 Pancras dist-so did she just take the BIRKIN name???
My interest is -according to family recollections HARRY STROVER BIRKIN's father was "of the gentry" and set ALLEN BIRKIN up in a small business to "take care of" HANNAH and children.
Of course family recollections have proven to be a little muddled before.

Thank you for helping fit another part of the puzzle.

Hi

Allan Starr BIRKIN & Hannah ROBINSON married in 1868.

SEPT quarter 1868 - PANCRAS 1b 247.

It would be well worth ordering the marriage certificate as this would give you both parties father's names and occupations, which would settle the "gentry" question for Allan BIRKIN.  They can be ordered online at the GRO.

Interesting.  I think that this is Allan in 1861 born Basford Nottinghamshire

RG9/2439 Folio 42  Page 22
Rawson Street
Basford
Notts

BIRKIN

William, Head, Widower, 53, Manager in Lace Factory, b Belper, Derbyshire
Henry, Son, Unm, 27, Designer & Draughtman, B Basford, Notts
Harriett, Dau, Unm, 22, b ditto
Eliza, Dau, Unm, 20, b ditto
Augustus, Son, Unm, 19, Apprentice, b ditto
Allan, Son, Unm, 17, Apprentice, b ditto
Walcote? Son, Scholar, b ditto
Hannah HIGGS, Servant, 14, General Servant, b East Bridgford, Notts

Having checked the 71 entry again, I see that Allan was born in Basford Notts, so I am sorry to have misled you - senior moment I'm afraid :-[

Thank you -that is a find -as Harry Strover Birkin (son of Allan Birkin) married and lived in Nottinghamshire-wondered what his connections there were.-he probably came to live with grandparents

You have done so much work for me -I am very grateful
