Please help me find Grt Gran Eliz Scott
« on: Wednesday 15 March 06 10:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I wonder if any one can help me solve this little Mystery or come up with any ideas as to how I can solve it.

Elizabeth Scott b 17th Aug  1885  Castleton Illegitimate Mother Ann Scott

Ann died 8th Dec 1886 @ Bogg Cottage Canonbie Dumfriesshire
death Cert signed by Father George Scott ( leaving Eliz who would have been 16 months )
( Ann must have been at home with her parents when she died , but not when she gave birth to Elizabeth. The parents were living at Bogg Cott in 1883 and also 1887 I know this from her brother and sisters birth certs . Eliz was born Castleton just over the hill so presumably Ann was in service in Castleton in 1885.)

In 1891 Ann’s parents have moved to Kirkton
George Head
Isabella Wife
Michael Son  12
John Son  10
Janet Dtr  7
Annie Dtr  3

The other Dtr Betsy 15 Is a servant  at Whitlaw Farm House
And Mary Catherine is a Servant at 19 Bridge Street Hawick
There is another Dtr Helen Scott B 10TH Dec 1869 at Castleton I Can’t find anything on her Marriage, death  or Census perhaps Elizabeth was living with her ?

In 1901 Elizabeth is a Servant (now goes under the name of Betsy) @ 13 Douglas Square Castleton  age 15. (I think it is her correct name age and birthplace)

The Grandparents George and Isabella are living at Bellshiel Edron Berwickshire.

What I would like to know is where Eliz was  from 16 months old in 1886 till 15 yr old in 1901?

Thanks Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Unfortunately, looking for someone called Elizabeth Scott in Roxburghshire, is equivalent of looking for a John Smith in England!!  There are loads of them.

Other than trawling through all the Elizabeth Scotts in the 1891 census who are about the right age, I would start looking 'sideways' at the problem.  Did her mother have any siblings that she might have been staying with.  It might be worth looking at them.  I can see from the entry for the 1891 census for Ann's parents that there ar younger siblings, but I would assume that there are some that are of comparable age to Ann.  Alternatively, she could be staying with a sibling of one of her grandparents.

Personally, I would try to trace backwards and sideways to track her down.   Have you found the family on earlier census records to see about siblings of Ann or her parents?

Cheers,
Clare

Hi ,

The only sibling I can't find anything about is Helen b 1869 Castleton .
I am trying to wade my way through Georges brothers but as you say the name Scott is so popular and they all seem to have the same christian names, I could be here forever however it will keep me out of mischief.

Thanks for your input.

Hi there,

Most of my research is concentrated around Castleton and Hawick, so if I see anything when I am on my travels that looks relevant, I will let you know.

Just as an aside, I see from your signature that you are also researching the name Hume.  I have Humes connected to Scotts in my tree.  What Hume names are you looking for?

Cheers,
Clare

Hi Claire

Michael Scott Married Ann Hume the parents of Ann were:

Peter Hume (Laborer) and Betty Dinwoodie

This couple had 3 children that I can find:

Ann b sept 1797 Cavers
Jean b march 1800 Cavers
Peggy bNov 1805 Cavers

Not sure whether they are referring to the place or the parish when they say Cavers.

Thanks Lesley

Hi there,

I have Humes in Hawick.

John  Hume married Beatrice Liddel - no dates or places yet.

They had:
Walter Hume b1819 in Hawick parish

He married a Margaret Scott b. 1832 in Dumfriesshire in 1855 (I think at Langholm)  They had 8 children that I can find.

I wonder if there is a connection there somewhere... possibly another one for me to follow up.

Cheers,
Clare
