Opolio Consulate Cert. of Registration

Wonder if anyone can help.  I have a certificate of registration dated 26th January 1899 for A.Artingstall, stating said person is duly registered as a British Subject at the Consulate in Daysferry House, Opolio.

I have reason to believe that this gentleman married Nellie Loosley and they had a child in 1903.

Under what circumstances would such a certificate be issued and where is Opolio?

Alfred Artingstall married Nellie Loosley in Hackney in the March quarter of 1901. On the 1901 census the couple were in Eccles. Alfred's birthplace doesn't give any clues but maybe his occupation does.

I wonder if it actually says Oporto and this was the address of the British Consul in Oporto in Portugal?  Seeing the trading agent part, that might just fit.

Thanks for the information and suggestion.  I have attached the document. There is also sketch drawing showing the Boer war and the words Ladysmith and Tugela written which would tye in with the African connection.

Hmm.... does look like Opolio.  Shame the stamp has partially come off!

Could it be Opobo?   If you google that it is in Nigeria.
