« on: Thursday 29 January 04 18:28 GMT (UK) »
Anyone know anything about George HILLMAN born about 1826.  Census says born Iswell but no suck place.  Wondered if it was Isfield.  Later census says Brighton.

Any info about his father Humphrey HILLMAN?  Is he in 1851 census?

Thank you for looking.  George was in London by 1851.

Could you look at Newick for Humphrey Hillman.

Very greatful for your help.  Do you need anything from Bethnal Green, London?

Hi Sylviaann

Have looked at Newick in East Sussex without success for Humphrey Hillman.

Have also checked all 23 volumes (over 200,000 names) of June Barnes Census Transcription of the 1851 census for East Sussex - and he aint there.

Sorry

Thank you very much.  Even a negative is useful.  He must have died.

Thanks again

Dont give up yet

Just done a quick search in the Freebmd for a Humphrey Hillman dieing in Sussex anytime at all.

It came up with just one

Deaths Dec Quarter 1845
HILLMAN  Humphrey Francis    Brighton  7 169

Its a long shot - but its a start, as the death certificate will give you an address from which it is possible to re-check in the Street Directories.

Thank you I had seen that but I've had an expensive month and it will have to wait a few weeks.  I sent for 4 death certificates which I was sure were mine.  Only one is a definate.  It's a bit disappointing.

There are three Humphrey Hillmans in Sussex on IGI
one born 1725 is too early but there is one born 1780 Barcombe and one born Isfield 1785.

I haven't looked at this line for about a year and am just going through everything and writing it up.
I will let you know how I go on.

Chris - you mention the excellent transcription of the 1851 census

Have also checked all 23 volumes (over 200,000 names) of June Barnes
Census Transcription of the 1851 census for East Sussex - and he aint there.

However, it is worth noting that the booklets don't cover Brighton, Hove or the Preston area in the north part of modern Brighton.

There are transcriptions done more recently now for part of Brighton in 1851 (the "Level" area), but I don't think there have been transcripts published for the rest of the town yet. I'd love to hear if you know of any progress!

There would be alot of work involved in covering the whole of the town. The population of Brighton almost doubled between 1841 and 1871 (from 46,000 to 90,000).

I'm seeking a HILLMAN family from Brighton myself: Elizabeth Gasston HILLMAN born about 1829 (but in Southwark, London by 1851). She was the daughter of an Edward HILLMAN (who was deceased by her wedding in 1855). Witnesses at wedding were an Elizabeth and an Edward Henry HILLMAN.

Hello

I'm not sure if you were contacting me or Chris.  I wanted to reply to Chris but don't know how to do that.  I expect he will read it anyway.  If you were looking for my Humphrey, thanks.  This seems to be an elusive family.

I sent for the death certificate of Humphrey Francis and the day after I found a note in my file saying he had been born in 1945.  Sure enough when the certificate arrived it was for a baby.  Father Richard.  Oh well I'll leave that one alone for a while and go on to another family.

Thanks anyway.  I don't have anything on your Edward.
