They are all living at 39/40 Montague Street (there is no surname for John or Hannah but there is for Mary). William is a Grocer and his family is still living there in 1881 and 1891. Possibly Alice is a second wife married between 1871 and 1881 and some of the children were hers and just took his name after the marriage. maybe his own daughters died or maybe i am living in cloud cuckoo land and it is completely the wrong person

There is an Alice Small widow age 46 living at 6 Pearson street in 1891 with annie age 22, john age 19 and ellen age 14 so it looks like John dies between 1881 and 1891.

funnily enough Thomas Burrows is living at 68 Montague Street in 1891 although he is now 39 and from manchester

Hi Donna

I think that you may have found a connection to my John Small, William could be John's brother, the christian names
Ellen, Joseph, Alice, Mary, keeps cropping up.

Mary Alice married John Small in 1864, I dont think she liked the name of Mary, the 1881 census and the 1891 census she was Alice (I found the same as you on the 1891 census
living in Pearson Street. not far from her Daughter Elizabeth))
on the 1901 census she was Mary Alice aged 55 living with her married daughter  Elizabeth in Pearson Street, her name and age have never been consistant.
