Hi,
I've been following the posts on Ferriers with interest and wondered if you knew that some of the name variants of the surname are Ferrar, Farrier and Ferrer - which might be useful in your searches.

I was fortunate to be contacted last year through Genes Reunited by a gentleman who has spent 38 years researching and building up a vast database on Ferriers...I have a Jean Ferrar born in Glass, Aberdeenshire in about 1760... he was able to tell me a bit about the history of the Ferriers which was fascinating though we didn't find a connection.

This morning, I sent him the link to this thread as I think that he will be interested and might want to join in - I hope so anyway.  :)

Reference the first question about John Ferrier marrying Susannah Scott. I have two references to a marriage of John Ferrier to Susannah Scott the first in Barry angus on the 6th January 1751, (or is it 1757) and the second on 8th December 1861 in Dundee. Is this the same couple or is it two couples where the first had a James and John in 1757 and 1759 and then the rest were born in Dundee to the other couplle.

Hello my name is Martin Ferrier. I have been researching the name Ferrier and variations for the last 41 years and have a database of about 760,000 ferriers/relations. Most of these are not in my family tree. I am more than willing to share information the information I have gathered and hopefully expand my knowledge of Ferrier worldwide. My own particular branch of Ferrier started out life  as Ferrar in Aberdeen in Scotland about 1700. You can view a fairly recent copy of my specific tree at  http://www.new-destiny.co.uk/martin/genealog.htm. I currently communicate with several hundred other people who are researching Ferrier.

As far as I can figure it the majority (about 80%) of the Ferriers come
from Angus. Some got the name Ferrier because they
ferried people across rivers. There were definately parts of that source
which moved locally to Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Another source was Normandy in France where early on a de-Ferriere came over to England with William the conqueror. This family later changed their name to deFerrer and there are several towns in england with the part of their name being De Ferrer.

There is a branch of that Family it is believed, (although never
definitively traced) in the Norfolk area of England. There are also
pockets of the name which came from France, Ireland, Portugal, and Italy.
Naturally there are many corruptions of the name and one which is
poularly quoted is a corruption of Farrier a person who shoes horses. Several Ferriers emigrated to the US, Canada and Australia. There are many in Australia mainly from Scottish descent.  There are several in Ontario who come also from Scotland. There was a large family in the Orange county area of NY which came from an Irish/Scottish  Ferrier. There is also a large family around Mifflin County Pennysylvania who came from Scotland. I know that some of the Ontario Ferriers came via the US and also went back to the US and I believe that some of those were from Missouri but have never found anyone
who had much information about them.

I have a lot of fragmented information on US Ferriers from Census records,
death records telephone records. Where I can trace someone back to
england/wales or scotland I have a lot of information on
birth/death/marriage census information. Currently of the entries
I have I can link myself to a few hundred of them, although my full
tree with other branches of the family is several
thousand in size. My own antecedents come from Aberdeen in Scotland,
then to London via the north of England, following the docks.
They have been in London area since about 1850. I am trying to trace other
parts of the Ferrier family to get a comprehensive picture.

regards
Martin Ferrier

Hi Martin,

I thought Elaine's contact might be you! Welcome!

We've been in contact before about the Ferriers from Perth. I'm still trying to find the birth/baptism of ALEXANDER FERRIER,  husband of JEAN STEWART and father of CHARLES BISSET FERRIER.

You thought Alexander was born about 1765 in Perth but I haven't been able to find him and was beginning to wonder if his family had moved up from the Edinburgh area as there are a few Ferriers on the IGI from that neck of the woods.

Have you discovered anything else since we last 'spoke'?

Jill
HELP!!!

 BATHSHEBA BOOTHROYD bn c. 1802 W. Yorks.

Baptism nowhere to be found. Possibly in a nonconformist church near ALMONDBURY or HUDDERSFIELD.

In the  data presented the dates in brackets e.g. (-1757-1787-) are only
estimates and are the dates when I know someone lived for sure, they do not
necessarily depict the date of birth or death. The birth date may be earlier
and the death date later. They may coincide with the birth and death dates.
The presence of second date does not imply they are dead. All dates are in
