The Bullyard, Spilsby- Where is this?
« on: Thursday 07 October 04 13:32 BST (UK) »
I have a family- Thomas and Hannah Hancock -who lived from 1841-1884 at a location called the BullYard in Spilsby Lincolnshire.  What is ment on the census by the name the Bull Yard?  They were tailors by trade so I doubt it was a farm.  A name for their house? :)

I browsed the Historical Directories site, using Bull Yard as the keywords, and found it in Spilsby.  One mention was for the frequency of a carrier's van leaving the Bull yard every Tuesday for .... whichever village.  This was under "Carriers from the Inns" so I suspect that it was literally the [court]yard of the Bull Inn that it left from.  Perhaps your Hancocks had their business and home in the buildings surrounding the courtyard of the inn.

Thank you.  I understand what you are saying.  Since, their occupation was a tailor, then I am sure they would have lived/worked in a place in the village that would have had a lot of foot traffic/potential customers.

The census never listed them as inn keepers so I am assuming their residence looked over the Bull Yard.  An interesting side note, is Hannah Tyson's son in law in 1881 was a coach driver.

Thansk again- Kristin

Hi, I have just notice this after a google search! I think that it is my family who you are related to from the bull yard in spilsby! There are many Hancocks in the Spilsby and Skegness area of Lincolnshire, and we all descend from the same ancestors as you seem to! If you want any information please ask...
