1871 l/u, please - Berry - Leeds?
« on: Friday 24 March 06 03:30 GMT (UK) »
 hi,
Would someone have a look for Ann Elizabeth BERRY (nee Thompson) for me please? I think she may have married Alfred Berry in 1867 at St Saviour, Cross Green, Leeds. I have posted a request previously to look up Alfred in '71, without success. I didn't have a marriage for him on that occasion. I am hoping the extra info might turn them up. Here is HIS '61 and '81 data.

Hi Peter

Could you give us a clue as to who Miss Thompson's  father was if you now have the marriage certificate?

And how old was she at time of marriage?

Thanks for your reply.
I don't have the mc, because the marriage is only a possible at the moment. Here are two possible births from YorkshireBMD for Ann Elizabeth before 1850:

1846   THOMPSON   Ann Elizabeth   Kirkstall   Leeds   KIRK/13/300
1848   THOMPSON   Ann Elizabeth   Holbeck   Leeds   HOLB/16B/100

So in 1871 she would be 25 or 23.

I was hoping that if I could find her in '71, then I could find her earlier with her parents.

Hi peter

Looks like there may have to  be a purchase made for one of the childrens certificate to pin down Alfred's wife.

I have a anothe hunt but she doesn't show up for me.

Maybe someone else might have more luck.

Thanks Wendy,

I am beginning to think that Alfred and wife were not in the '71 census for some reason.
Alfred only had one child, as far as I can tell. As you say, a bc might be the only solution.

Thanks for that, Wendy.

I think that address is 1 Low Fold. Right on the river bank. I have the details of the '71 census. I just can't find Alfred in '71.

Hi Peter

I have only recently come across your search for Ann Elizabeth Berry (nee Thompson) in various censuses in particular those for 1871 and 1881.  I am afraid I cannot directly help you as I have come across the same problem (quite independently).  However, I have found her in the 1911 census under her full married name Ann Elizabeth Berry where she is living with her daughter, Emma Townend (it is the Townend branch that leads me here) and her family.  Ann is described as head and married, not widowed but I cannot find Alfred her spouse anywhere in the census!  The census also gives Ann's birthplace as Hull and indeed there are several Ann Elizabeth Thompsons born in Hull around that time (1844) but I have not been able to use that information to trace her parents.

Owing to the time that has elapsed since you originally posted this I hope this reaches you or someone else who has picked up the thread.  Sorry it hasn't answered your query but it might help.  As you implied it may need a purchase of the relevant marriage certificate to settle this one.  Incidentally to that end I have Ann Elizabeth Thompson's marriage to Alfred Berry in Leeds in 1867.

Mike
