Hello.

I can suggest you try posting on the 'Great War' forum
http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?act=idx

They are the most helpful people I have come across in the 12
years I have been on-line.

Ask about the war diaries of the 51st Siege Battery, someone
that visits Kew on a regular basis may do a lookup for you.

They provided me with the diaries of my grandfathers 28th
Siege Battery, they are very helpful indeed, but not all diaries
included names of individuals, it will depend on wether the
officer commanding the battery noted down the wounding and
subsequent death of Charles, but you will see where the battery was located on a daily basis.

BTW, your Charles Jewell died of wounds on the 13 Nov 1916
and may have been wounded either on that day or earlier!.

The 'Soldiers Died' CD has your Charles born Jersey, residence
was Stoke Newington, Middlesex, and he enlisted in London.

Good luck.

Mike.

Hi Mike ! Thanks for that!!

I'm already on the GWF - haven't had an answer yet ... ! :-\
The Seige batterys seem to go from 50 - 52 skips 51 ... !!
I've been searching for the War Diary - but haven't found it yet ... all the guys I know are experts in all the other regiments  - not this one - I'm afraid .... !!
Would that still have been the Somme on that date - towards the end ?
Thanks for the Soldiers Died - I was hoping somebody would have it !!
His wife was from London - not sure how he got there from Jersey yet!!

Thanks again Mike I appreciate your help !

Hello Annie.

The same applies to the 28th, not listed on the Long, long trail
I think it is just that the website owner has not researched them as yet.

Looking at the diaries of the 28th, from the 10th-17th Nov 1916 the whole battery was at the Citadel rest camp.

Did you post your request in the Artillery section of the forum!,
I know there are a few kind souls there that will do a lookup
for you, ask for the diary entry for the two or three days prior
to the death of Charles on the 13th.

There was a major push on the 13th November the BEF captured the fortress at Beaumont Hamel, but bad weather
ended any further gains.

Perhaps Charles battery were involved in this battle?.

Mike.

annie, bypass the battery and go for the town he lived in,one of our pals on the GWF must live near stoke newington, see if his names recorded on the memorial,i think its in abney park, hackney archives dept has a list of all those from stoke newington who died in the war,see if one of the pals can look for you,i searched for 2 hours last night, and didnt come up with anything, mack

the reason theres no war diary is because artillery batterys didnt keep one,if one exists its because someone decided to make a record of their movements,it could have been a officer or other rank, those that exist are either personal ones or they are excerts taken from the brigade or divisional diaries, mack

Hello again.

Diaries do exist for artillery regiments, the following picture shows the
28th Siege Battery Diary which is an almost daily report on many factors
and written each day by the officer commanding, eith a captain or major.

As you can see the diary is from Sept 1915- Nov1917.

I have had many names re-kindled in my memory of pals of my grandfather
that are mentioned in the diary, also many place names that I remember my
grandfather telling me about and the events that occurred.

There is no reason to believe that all other batteries did not maintain the same diary.

All are hand written by the officer commanding, some writing has faded but
I have been able to read every word.

Mike.
