I am intersted in finding out about the surname HERCULES which was my mother's maiden name.

Her grandfather Joseph or possibly great grandfather Charles is said to have come from Greece. Since 1873 they lived in Liverpool Joseph was about 26.

I have no other info before this...any information would be appreciated..ekell3

The Hercules and Cain families came from the Isle of Man, the Cain's came over between 1861 & 1871. I haven't found when Joseph came over here but as a Mariner he probably came over for work.

Joseph Alexander Hercules married Elizabeth Cain in St Peter's C of E Church, Everton 16 June 1873. The address in the wedding register for both of them was 24 Howe Street, Everton, often people used the same address for a marriage so they were living in the Parish. 74 Howe Street was Elizabeth's family home on the 1871 Census (Reference RG10/3815) where she lived with her parents and her brother Robert. Just after they married they were living with Elizabeth's parents in 74 Howe Street. Joseph & Elizabeth had 7 children. After Joseph died in 1886, Elizabeth remarried in 1891 to James Radcliff and she had 2 further children.

Howe Street no longer exists it has now been taken over by a sports centre, it ran parallel to Buckingham Street off Great Homer Street.

Herculeson's in Scotland, most in Shetland. The bulk of Shetlanders went to sea, called North Sea Chinamen, Shetland was the last chance of finding spare crew for ships heading NW.

I can’t see the surname in the Isle of Man or anywhere really apart from your family.

the first Joseph Alexander Hercules obviously dies between 1877 and 1883
so the Joseph born 1883 is obviously your DIRECT Ancestor
