Tricky One - 1846 NSW Death Cert not issued
« on: Friday 31 March 06 03:53 BST (UK) »
Regarding my 3g grandmother Amelia Du Croix (aka Emily Ducrot), born 1798 France (parents unknown) died of complications due to childbirth aged 48 years on 9 June 1846 Petersham NSW Australia.  Buried 12 June 1846 in an unmarked grave when her last child Rose Anne O'Keeffe was just a 3 day old infant.

I don't believe death certificates were issued in 1846 and civil registration only came in around 1860 in NSW.  So I have much difficulty trying to track her details down to confirm them.  I was rather hoping that I could easily obtain this and source her parents' names.

Some other data on Amelia/Emily:

1st marriage C1826 - John McCrohon 1795-1839 (well documented family) an Irishman of the 4th Regiment of Foot in either England, Ireland or France.
Issue: 9 children, John, William, Jeremiah, Henry, Sydney, Francis, Suzannah, Adelaide Amelia & Louis Estall McCrohon.  (Have all dates etc.)

2nd marriage C1842 - Thomas O'Keeffe 1787-1876
Issue: 3 children, Margaret b abt 1843, Mary Anne born 1845, and Rose Anne born 1846.  Locations unknown.

What suggestions please?  Any takers on this one?  Allycat.

I'm guessing the family would be Catholic, being Irish/French?  You might be able to find something in church records although I wouldn't know where those are held for NSW.

You could also try and track the exact movements of the 4th of Foot around 1826 and figure out what parts of France they were in, presuming that they did meet there.  Have you tried the overseas records of Regimental marriages?

(indexes are on 1837online.com but it does say there's some that have never been indexed...)

Hey there Jadewing, thank you for that.  Sorry for late reply but the motherboard in my PC carked it.  Unfortunately Mary O'Keeffe that you found was not one of mine.  The Mary O'Keeffe in my tree married a Kelly and went on to have children.  But thank you very much anyway.  Allycat.

Hi Allycat

Do you have Thomas O'Keeffe's death certificate, it should have place of marriage etc.

This will give you a starting point.

Hey Genni, thanks for your suggestion.  Didn't think anyone was still reading my topic.  As my ancestors were the McCrohons and Du Croix' (her daughter Suzannah McCrohon being my gg grandmother) it would be irrelevant for me to obtain Thomas O'Keeffe's death certificate.

As an aside - I think it's awful that my ancestor Amelia/Emily Du Croix had 9 children, then her husband died, then she remarried again, and had 3 more children, the last one when she was 48 years old!  And then she died from complications of childbirth when the baby was only 3 days old.  Good grief.  Times were hard.

Allycat.
