Thanks for those pictures.

I have been a member of Southwell on Line for about 1 year now.

Their last crossword for the month of August was won by myself - got a £25 voucher to spend at a Restaurant in Southwell next time I go up there.

Web site seems to be having problems letting people in who are not using IE 6, and XP; although other browers can get in ok

Am trying to sort out the code etc to make it work properly

Am going to a conference in Leicester this weekend, so will be in your neck of the woods.

Bringing the family with me and they are staying with relatives in Loughborough.

As always, when we come up that part of the country, we will be putting flowers on graves both in Normanton and Sutton Bonnington Churchyards.

I will be visiting Hardys Yard with my camera to take some pictures, plus looking at the 1851 census the other day for Normanton, I noticed several Framework Knitters listed - so will try to locate their houses in Normanton

Hi all, for my birthday my elder daughter bought me two years' subs to the Nottinghamshire Local History Society for which I received the two journals for 2005 and one for 2003.
  I found several very interesting articles.
Life and Times At Southwell- including summary of Professor Stanley Chapman talk on the Maythorne Cotton Mill. The professor has published a book "Hosiery and Knitwear" by OUP. Maythorne was valued at GBP 2,800 in 1784.
In the latest edition, there is an article "Birkins: Nottingham Lace Manufacturers" by Stanly Chapman too. There is some great photos including a beautiful picture of the mending room in 1914. There is also a good bibliography.
A good investment especially if a daughter pays.

Hey, thats great - any chance of getting a copy of same.

My ancestors spent over 60 years at the Mill, so am very interested in putting 'flesh on their bones' and learning more of their life in Nottinghamshire.  One of their children aged 8, who worked in the Mill in 1866, died when he fell into a vat of boiling water used to extract the silk from its worm.

Papplewick mill had most of its labour recruited from workhouse young children so perhaps Southwell workhouse did similar.
