Looking for GG grandfather
« on: Sunday 02 April 06 08:02 BST (UK) »
??? I have been trying to find the birth of my Great grandfather Norton McKeague, borned in 1830 and his father was William McKeague, they both were born in Canada. Norton Married a Mary Ann Ault in Ill, and William married a Charlotte McDonald or MacDonald. I have a Biography that says William and Charlotte were both born in Canada too.

Hi,

If you don't already have them, it might be useful to get their:
- marriage records
- death records
- obits

Perhaps those documents might list what part of Canada they or their relatives lived in.

1830 is really early for Canadian records.  Cross your fingers that you will learn at least the province (and ideally the city or town) so you can contact the appropriate church archives.

Have you see the Canada GenWeb site:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~canwgw/

Good luck!

Josephine,
I know that Norton McKeague was born in Ontario in 1830, William McKeague is his father and William was born in Canada too. I am not sure where. I am not to sure if the spelling of the last name was different. I have a biography that says Williams wife ( Charlotte McDonald ) was born in Canada too. Norton was married in ILL. I got the marrage certificate, but it does have any info on it.

Do you know when they moved to the United States?

When did Norton get married?

I know that the Biography says this word for word
Norton McKeague, farmer, section 32,Kinston Town ship was born July 15, 1830, in the county of Durham, Ont. and is the son of William and Charlotte (McDonald) McKeague, both of whom were born in Canada, of Scotch ancestry. They continued to reside in Canada afte their marriage, and there passed their entire lives, where they reared their six children, Norton,Helen,George,Diana,William,Mary.
Norton was educated in the excellent schools of the Domitrion, until 18 years old.at the age mentioned he went to the state of New York, and passed 3 year in Livingston County, and subsaquently returned to Canada.Norton remained in Canada for 18 months and then in October 1853 moved to Kane County, ILL, And in 1857 moved to DeKalb County.
I have more if you want.

Hi,

You have his date of birth and the county he was born in.  You know he was Scottish, so his family was probably Presbyterian.

You could write to the archives for the Presbyterian Church:
http://www.presbyterian.ca/archives/geneal.html

You could also write to the Durham Region Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society:

In case you haven't seen this:

Hi cb
As part of your search involves Canada, have you tried placing a post on our Canada Immigrants board??
I'll leave this one here as some of his life was in the USA.

Our Canada researchers do an excellent job, especially if you provide them with all the information you have, and what you are wanting to find.

Oh, that's too bad.  ; )  I guess the biography got that part wrong.

1830 is way before civil registration in Canada so you'll be dependent on church records.

Good luck.
