Graham, Johnston, Simpson, Lamont etc
« on: Monday 03 April 06 04:33 BST (UK) »
 Hi all,

I have found a connection to the Graham family residing in North Bute from at least 1829 to 1871.  Alexander Graham married Janet Johnston in 1829 at Rothesay.

I have a good amount of information about this family, with connections to the families of Simpson, Lamont, McDermid and of course Johnston.  There is also mention of a connection to the Campbell family. Also the Glasgow families of McQueen and Binnie.

My interest in this family group was stirred by one of the Graham descendents marrying William Easton, part of my main paternal line.

Hi there,

It is a distant connection.  I have found some loose links to Campbells in Bute, Glasgow, Ayr, Ireland, Caithness and Stirling.  None of them are in my main tree branches, just some detours I tool along the way because I was curious.

Not sure if you have all the info from the 1829 Marriage?
Alexander was a Farmer in Skerral, Father JOHN Farmer in Rothesay
Janets Father was HUGH a Farmer in West St Kalnaig

Thank you Trish,

I knew where they were from, but from the census, not the marriage details.  I will look it up.  I had such fun researching this side branch, learning a lot about Bute and the farm 'Scarrel' which is visible on old maps. The Johnstons and Grahams were well established families on Bute, so I really enjoyed researching them!

Hi there,

I'm researching my Lamont family in Bute, so would be interested to know if you've found anything relevant to my descendants.

My GGrandfather was Alexander Lamont b.1870 in Kilfinan, he emigrated to South Africa which is where my father and I were born. But some of Alexander's siblings (and cousins I think) lived in Port Bannatyne. Siblings include:

-Margaret Lamont b.1866
-Isabella Lamont b.1867
-Hugh Lamont b.1868 m.Helen Martin
-Archibald Lamont b.1872 m.Catherine McKinnon
-Elizabeth Lamont b.1877 m.Duncan McCunn
-John Lamont b.1879
-Colin Lamont b.1881
-Mary Lamont b.1886

Alexander's parents were Coll Lamont b.1837 and Elizabeth McNicol b.1875

Thanks for your help,
Kathy

Hi Ninatoo!
Apologies for chiming in on such an old thread. I am searching for details on a John Graham who is apparently from Rothesay. John would be my GGGF, however we can find no information on his marriage, or my GGF's birth etc, so we have hit quite the brick wall.
A handwritten note left by my great aunt stated that he was from Rothesay so I am following this line of enquiry.
I note that there was a John Graham living with your Hugh, etc at Scarrel and I wondered whether you had any information on what happened to this particular John Graham?
Our John's son (Charles, my GGF) was living in Australia and therefore I wonder whether John moved to Aus?
Thanks so much!
