Hi sue.

Yes that’s the record. I have a copy of the birth certificate for David George Raper, 2nd sept, 1838 Yet desperately trying to find More information about his son (John William Raper, my g,g grandfather)

Ps not sure how to share photos. New to all this.

Thanks

Anuschka

Are you certain David has the middle name George on his birth certificate -as I have checked 3 different sites and no middle name and on all census I cannot find David with a middle name of George ??

I will look to see what I can find on John William

Had to check to make sure we had the correct person

David is on 1841 census with his parents and sister (as posted - next door to them is a Palliser family who could possibly be related to David's mother Mary Ann nee Palliser

1851
Westside Sowerby Yks
George Raper Head M 36  Cordwainer Thirsk
Mary Ann wife Kilvington Yks
DAVID son 12
Martha daughter 10
Sarah daughter 7
Mary Ann daughter 5
George son 4
William son 2
Elizabeth Ann daughter 1 Sowerby
children all except Elizabeth Ann b Thirsk
HO107 2371 194 20

1861Little Sowerby
George Raper Head M 45 Pig Jobber Thirsk
Mary A wife 48 Kilvington
David son 23 Fruiterer thirsk
William son 13
Ann daughter 10 Sowerby
Thomas son 8 Sowerby
Rebecca daughter 5 Sowerby

so David was not married by 1861
Do you know who and when he married?
When and where was John William born??

I do not know much about them apart from, John fought in the war, then ended up in South Africa.

I was given a death notice for a John McMahon (from my grandfathers sister many years ago saying he was her G grandfather.  from this document, it’s my understanding, David married a Catherine Amelia Raper (McMahon), my GG grandmother)

My Grand father and his siblings were born is South Africa.

Any other details about John is not known and somewhat elusive to me and my family.

Sue

In respose to your questions:

Quote
Who did John W Raper marry and where?
Catherine Amelia McMahon, marriage location im assuming South africa, year unknow, I have found out that she was born in oudtshoorn, SA.

Quote
Why do you think they are related to David Raper from Thirsk??
My Late Grandfathers sister did some extensive research and dicovered that David was her G grandfather, which is why i have a copy of his birth certificate. It was the only record I was given, which she stated that he was indeed my GG Grandfather.

Quote
Did John William stay in South Africa ??
Im assuming yes, Sadly my late grandfather would probably have know where and when John Passed or at least his birthdate. which would have helped in the search.

Quote
Was Catherine Amelia McMahon 's father named John??
Yes, His father was Thomas McMahon and mother was Amelia Ann McMahon, as per His death notice, and Catherine Ameila Raper is listed as Children (Major)

Ive attached a link to David's Birthd Certificate

Sue, Thank you so much for your help so far, this is indeed interesting! Im assuming that the military record could possibly be him. Hopefully Ill be able to find out more about John William.

My father will be over the moon about what we have discovered so far.

Again thank you

Thanks
