Parish Magazines
« on: Wednesday 13 October 04 11:50 BST (UK) »
Has anyone been able to find/use old Parish Magazines for their research?

I for one, have not. But would like to try. I have no idea where to start looking. Did every parish issue one or was it a bit hit and miss?

I haven't used any, however I think the availability of such Parish Magazines vary throughout the U.K, if you put Parish Magazines for Glamorgan in google you will find many entries.

I believe most reference libraries would hold these, but it is down to the individual libraries for how long they hold onto them. Some will be for many years others only for a few.

For your region try: http://www.merthyr.gov.uk/Home/Leisure+and+Tourism/Libraries/What+the+Library+Offers/Local+History/default.htm

If the church still exists you could write to the current incumbent for info. Addresses are obtainable from websites for C of E, Roman Catholic, United Reform, etc etc

There is a site that is digitalising parish magazines which is searchable by name, but then you have to pay for the full entry, for the life of me I can't think where I saw it, but If I come across it I'll post it on this thread,
Jane

I have a few contacts with C of E churches and I'll ask them, if they know, how long ago they started issuing parish magazines and where are they archived.
I suspect that they are of relatively recent origin.

A school freind of mine is now a presbyterian minister. I'll drop him a line and ask what his church does. I know that he has actually put his church on-line.

For any interested Oz-Welsh:

I'll charge him for the advertising now.
