They estimate that about 5 to 10% of the 1861 census is missing.

Both of the links given in this thread now result in an error. Does anyone have an up-to-date link which provides this information ..... or have the missing pages been found?  ???

Oops! You're quite right JenB, I'd only seen the first 2 of the 3 links given. Many thanks and apologies.   :-[

I wonder if any missing pieces are still lurking in some vault somewhere?

For some missing images on Ancestry, it may be worthwhile contacting National Archives.

Another area that is missing some pages is Forest Gate, West Ham. Essex
The area ends at Folio 216 which is page 36 (it is heavily damaged).

Folio 198 says there should be 54 pages following it, so 18 pages of Forest Gate are missing, including Whitehall place. :'(

I have checked all the websites and even the Microfilm at the Essex Record Office. I spoke to National Archives and they said the only public access is to a copy of the same microfilm so I very much doubt the pages exist?

The link given in reply #16 doesn't work any more.
This one does:
http://www.findmypast.co.uk/helpadvice/knowledge-base/census/index.jsp#issues

I was helping someone with a query for Esher - piece 457. Looking sequentially through FindMyPast pages, the following pages ONLY are there:

Folio 1: Summary pages i to iv, pages 1 and 2
Folio 2: doesn't appear to exist
Folio 3: Summary pages v and vi, pages 3 & 4
Folio 4: Summary pages v and vi, pages 1 & 2
Folio 5: pages 1, 2, 3 and 4
Folio 6: pages 3, 4, 5 and 6
Folio 7: pages 5, 6, 7 and 8
   and so on.

Is it normal for each folio to contain just 4 pages?
