- Is it just me, really?
If "they" estimate 5 - 10% of the 1861 census is missing - how come they all seem to be my ancestors? So many seem absent in that vital year.
Do you think they were all huddled together on a remote mountain top, to outwit the "Nosey parkers"??
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

Hi there
The FindMyPast site doesn't seem to give the bits of the 1861 Census that are missing any more? Does anyone know whether the 1861 Census exists for Stoke Damerel (now Devonport) Devon, cos I can't find any of my rellies in 1861, they are there in 1841, 1851 and 1871, but not 1861 ??? I also have lost track of children at home in 1851, but by 1871 have moved on, and I don't know where they are!!
Thanks

You will find the most detailed information on 1861 missing pages by searching The National Archives catalogue. Use the advanced search, put in 'missing' OR 'wanting' as key words, and restrict the search to series RG 9. You get the following results:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_srt=1&_or1=missing&_or2=wanting&_cr1=rg+9&_dss=range&_ro=any&_hb=tna

You can do the same with other census years, but the information is less detailed. The detailed 1861 information was added by TNA only within the last year or so, as far as I know.

1861 has more bits missing than any other year, because it was kept in poor conditions for some time. GRO staff once had to refer to the books to verify ages for pension purposes, and pulling the books out and shoving them back took its toll, mainly on the front and back pages. The total amount missing is about 5%.

Is there somewhere that explains the missing addresses?

I am looking for St Brides Buildings which came under the district of St John the Evangelist, Westminster in the 1851 census. I've looked at various lists of missing sections, but can't find anything that gives details of the missing addresses.
Richards, Seddon, Welsh, Clark, Suttie, Ritchie, Tinworth, Harrington

In 1861, try RG9/50 fol 90 pp 27-28.

Is there somewhere that explains the missing addresses?

Registration districts with a population of 40,000+ were street-indexed. For those districts, there is some information on missing streets and parts of streets on this archived site ...
