Yes I had a list of some of the passengers on the Patel but it wasn't complete as the Wenzels weren't on it. I had found it on a web site ages ago and all I can tell you is it was by Diane Cumming (posibly when I was searching for Tasmanian convicts). The site which you recomended is much better and I will be referring to it often

No I didn't say any more because I was unsure about German information.
August Heinrich Frederick WENZEL his wife and children arrived Port Adelaide 1845 -from Bremen, Germany.   Thank you for answering and the web address which is very good. Unfortunately Wenzels initially
went to Burra Burra mine and that isn't mentioned although many Germans went there.

OK ! you got the passenger list! - were you able to download the Naturalisation papers ? and what kind of information did you get ? can you tell us here the kind of stuff you were able to see - ( it helps other people in their research - to be able to see what's available !!)

But what I'd really like you to do - is tell us what you really want ? - do you want information about when August was in Germany ? or do you have that - I'm unsure what it is you really want !!

Annie you are being very patient with me.
Re the Naturalisation papers - I haven't worked out how to follow through with the address you gave me - yet. The address is
www.naa.gov.au and has a wealth of information. Some things are digitised
but others have to be ordered. There is a great deal of early Australian history, and the people who made it.
I am trying to find out who Mrs Wenzel was,
back in Germany, as she died in Australia in 1853 and as yet doesn't even have a christian name.
I am unable to read/speak German so it would not help to see BD&M records for that country.

So here's how to get the Naturalisation papers

1. click on record search
2. click on search now
3. in the keywords type in August Wenzel - and press search
4. search results should say 29 matches
5. click on display
6. there are quite a few Wenzels ( some of them may be yours !) -
7. but near the bottom is August Wenzel - set 1/ no 62 folio 7 click on that ( date range 1849-1858 )
8. click on request copy
9. And then they will ask for your information !

His papers may give you the information you're looking for ! - let me know how you do !! I'm excited for you !

Annie  You are being very helpful and I followed the directions you gave, then clicked on 'More Information About This Item'. It cannot be displayed. I am going to try again on a friend's computer, maybe it is mine.
The Naturalisation papers appear to be 'open'.      I may have to go to Adelaide and see them, I wont buy a copy if there is nothing to gain.     
Whatever the results are I will keep you posted.  For the moment I will study the 'other Wenzels'  on that web adress, I have found a connection already.

I have been enjoying Rootschat for several months but cannot decide if  I am able to ask questions re German relations who emigrated to Australia.
If I can which board will they be posted on?

Dear Korne (and other interested RootsChatters).  I had been pondering exactly the same question re: where to post messages for immigrants that were not of UK/Eire origins.  I decided to place a post in Emigrants to Australia with a heading: My Prussian/German surname interests - and take it from there.  So far no replies, but many people have read my articles.

I too have a lot of German ancestry, as boatloads of German families came out in the 1850s to the Colony of New South Wales looking for a better life in the promised south lands.

Quite a few of my ancestors: the Webers, the Orths and Voss' being some, came out in 1855 on the ship Daniel Ross.  They had to undergo naturalisation, and were forced to Anglicize their German names.  Most if not all couldn't speak English so the families remained together even though they were not related by blood.

You might try posting a message at http://www.genealogy.com (after you register for free) on one of their genforums, in particular 'GERMANY' and see if you get any replies.  Also check if there is a forum for the particular surname you seek - you never know.

It has all the information about immigration and naturalisation records that you can get from them, and also tells you how to go about ordering them.  You don't have to go to Adelaide to see them (actually, I think the naturalisation papers are held here in the Canberra office) - they will send you a copy.

Hey there PrueM, thanks ... the National Archives is a regular site that I visit.  Unfortunately my German ancestors arrived prior to 1901.  What do I do then?  I'm in Queensland.

(parents names: Johann Heinrich Orth and Anna Maria Seigner of Hessen Germany)

Married in 1860 at Bundaberg to Johannes Heinrich WEBER born 1829 Dickshied Hesse Prussia Germany ... so they both must have arrived in Australia prior to 1860.  (his parents names: Anton Weber and Maria Gertrud Debus of Prussia).

Also looking for Frederick Joseph Herman VOSS, children - twins Dor VOSS and Otto VOSS.

I have searched the index to unassisted arrivals NSW 1842-1855 and found them.

But I can't find Fred Voss' wife entry to Australia, Johanna Doratea VOSS nee FLANZE (married 1859 Alshue Germany).  Their first child born in Australia was my gg grandfather, Frederick Voss, born 1856 Gurley Station near Gunnedah NSW.
