Finding an old book
« on: Thursday 14 October 04 01:25 BST (UK) »
I'm interested in locating a copy of a book that was probably published around 1840-45.

The title is: The Poet's Corner
The author is:  Alexander Wilson

Wilson was resident and active in Manchester.

I've made some efforts Googling, but the title appears on a gazillion web pages, so didn't get very far.

Can anyone recommend a good antiquarian book store/book finder?

I'm guessing it may be in Manchester public library, but I'm in Canada!

Many thanks

Tim,

Try this link

http://www.abebooks.com/

They act as a shopfront for bookstores worldwide and will link you up with the seller.  They cover all types of books modern to rare and I think there is a notify facility if the book is not currently in stock anywhere.

Thanks for the tip, Sue,

I tried the site, but no luck.  I guess this book probably had a very limited print run way back in the 1840's.

Cheers

Hi Tim,
While searching through the Internet, I came across the following site which might be of interest:
International League of Antiquarian Booksellers
http://www.ilab-lila.com/

Although a quick search didn't come up with 'The Poet's Corner', by Alexander Wilson, there is a "wants database".  You might like to put a request there.  You never know...

Thanks to Meg and MrB for their suggestions,

Since posting the original message last month, I've discovered that "The Poet's Corner" by Alexander Wilson is the title of a poem, not a book.  So now the search is that much more complicated - I have to try to find a book of unknown title that contains the poem!

All the best

I suggest you contact Manchester Family History Society on http://www.mlfhs.org.uk/index.html

They have a listing of old books and may be able to help you regarding this poem.

good luck
