1841 census - Hitchin - KNIGHT

Hi All,

I know it's not indexed - but when anyone is flipping thro the 1841 census can they keep an eye open for Benjamin Knight b. 1793 in Hitchin.
His wife should be Esther - children: Mary b1814, Harriett b 1816, Charles b1818, George b1820, Dinah b 1823, Esther b 1825, Thomas b 1827, Priscilla b 1829, Sarah b 1831 - all the children were born in Hitchin.

In 1851 Benjamin is a widower aged 58 living at the Skinner & Joinery in Hitchin as a lodger with no family!!

I want to make sure I have the correct details for his wife and any children.

Here you go Keith.........As you know, the 41 does not give relationships within households, marital status or exact place of birth.  It only indicates whether or not someone was born in the census county.  Adult ages are often rounded down to nearest 5.

Was a bit worried about whether I had the correct family - I know you should work backwards - but when brothers/children appear I like to try and follow them!!

Is Homer another name for Thomas - not had that one before.

I have double checked and it is Thomas and not Homer!   Sorry about that........take your pick........senior moment or perhaps I am watching too much television!!!

Hi Rick,

Thanks for that confirmation - did find it yesterday - after the '41 came on line - see why the problem came about tho - not easy to read.

I presume that there are still small lines between each household - seem missing in some cases - unless there were lots living together.
I have 3 lads aged 22/24 living together in Broxbourne - one a Tabram, maybe mine - bet they caused some fun when they went out drinking!!
