Hello
I would think that there is a strong possibility that Hugh Humphrey Evans was named after his Grandfather.

Hi Kaz

i think my great grandmother was May Evans wife of Hugh. i think i have my grandmothers birth certificate which show my grandmother Josephine May Evans daughter of Hugh Humphrey Evans (Actor) and May Evans (deceased). Registered birth in Easington (Shotton Colliery). My grandmother was adopted by a Frances Greener. my grandmothers marriage cert. shows her as being Josephine May E Greener and two of Josephine's sons had middle names as Evans which made me think that she may have been May and Hugh's daughter. Josephine was born in 1904 a month before May's death was registered. Not sure if you can shed any light on it as with he being adopted its hard to find out any information as Josephine dead when my mum was 13 i don't get to hear much of the history from that side of the family.

Im not sure if i am barking up the wrong tree. But delving back through our family history we have a Hugh Humphrey Evans (actor) and a May Evans "deceased" formally Meredith giving birth to a daughter Josephine May on  13 september 1904 in Sunderland Row, shotton colliery road. This information is from Josephines birth certificate, and to me seems very similar to dismiss. I dont know what everyones thoughts are around this, but thought id add to the pot.

Regards
Emma

Hi, I'm doing research for my cousins husband and his father was Donald Evans who was the son of Hugh Humphreys Davey Evans and May Evans nee Meredith. May Evans died on 16th Oct 1904 at Sunderland Row, Shotton Colliery, Easington, Durham. Cause of death - Confinement Zymotic Enteritis Synope, which sounds like it would have been an infection of some sort following or not long after childbirth. Donald was raised by his Grandmother Sarah Meredith nee Price who later married again to become Sarah Exton. Donald would have been aged 4 when his mother died and is possibly Josephine's brother?

I'm unsure where the Evans/Meredith are in our family tree, but am awaiting my nanna to speak to her cousins in Durham to ask as they were the ones that sent this i fo down. The route is through my nannas side and she was a Gill, her mum was Agnes Outhwait, and she (Agnes) married John William Gill.

Agnes was 8 when she lost her mum in child birth to her 8th child. So nanna dont know her grandmothers name, as she died when her mum was very young.

Agnes moved to North Yorkshire near selby to work. We have some of the family tree from 1600s but have not recieved the rest. But the copy of birth certificate for Josephine was in with this. But its been passed round family  before my nanna got it. So waiting on further information from them in the know in Durham.
