I am looking for James & Frances Holt in the 1841 census for Eccles. Both born around 1780/84 in Eccles Lancs.  They were married in Eccles 1804.

Thank you

Hi Lybis,

I cannot find a Frances Holt in the Eccles area in 1841 and the nearest I can find for a James Holt is the following entry:-

1841 Census

Monton, Barton upon Irwell, Eccles, Lancashire

James Holt - 60 - Agent - y. (born in county)

Mary Holt - 65 - y.

Katharine Holt - 25 - y.

Mary Holt - 25 - y.

Ruth Holt - 20 - y.

Ref:  HO107 / 542 / 3 / ED5 / f.30 / p.5

The ages of persons over 15 were rounded down by the enumerators on the 1841 Census to the next lower figure divisible by five e.g. in the above example the actual ages of Katharine and Mary could be anything between 25 and 29.

Do you have additional information i.e children, occupations etc which might assist in locating the right family and do you know that they were both alive in 1841?

Hi Richard

Thank you very much for your reply.  I'm afraid all I know about James Holt Snr is on his son James marriage certificate in 1840 in Liverpool, on which it states his occupation as Servant.

I have searched the Eccles Parish records and found James Holt Jnr baptised 1815 son of James & Frances Holt.  I then found further siblings Ellen, Ann, Frances, Charlotte & Caroline all born to a James and Frances.  I can only assume it is my 2nd Gt Grandfather and siblings, as I have no other record of the mother's name.

The first child was born 1805 which probably would make James Snr born abt. 1780-85. His occupations in the parish records vary from labourer, coachman and farmer. His son James was also described as coachman in 1851 census.

I don't know if the parents would have been alive in 1841, I suppose even having his name on his son's marriage wouldn't guarantee that he was alive at the time.

Sorry I can't be more help on this.
Kind regards
Lybis

Hi Lybis,

Thanks for your reply.

From what you say, I would think that James Holt Sen. would have been alive in 1840 at least.

Anyway, armed with your additional information, I'll resume my search for the family later today unless someone else comes up with what you are seeking in the meantime.

Regards,

Richard

Hi Lybis,

I'm still struggling to find your Holt family.

Do you have the birth / baptism dates or years for the children Ellen, Ann, Frances, Charlotte and Caroline?  This information, if available, might help me.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Richard

Hi,

Well spotted Dave - I think that, almost certainly, you have found the daughters Frances and Caroline Holt.

I've followed up your findings and discovered that the surname of the family listed is BOOND.

Further, I've discovered that a CAROLINE HOLT married JOHN BOOND at St. James Church, Manchester, on 18 August 1842 (per IGI).  The St. Catherine's Index reference is: Manchester; 1842 September Qtr.; vol. 20; p. 481.  Frances was unmarried in 1851.

I'll continue to search for the parents James and Francis.

Regards,

Richard

Hi again,

The nearest I've been able to find for an unmarried Caroline Holt in 1841, along with a James Holt, is the following:-

1841 Census

Square Brook, Chadderton, Lancashire

James Holt - 83 - Schoolmaster - y. (born in county)

Caroline Holt - 25 - Power Cotton Weaver - y.

Ref:  HO107 / 545 / 2 / ED3 / f.44 / p.15

Unlikely, I realise, but I thought that I ought to mention it.
