Query on criminal records
« on: Wednesday 04 February 04 14:53 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather was apparently imprisoned in the early 1920s due to embezzling a huge amount of his client's money (£30,000)!!!  At the time he was a solicitor, living in Cleobury Mortimer.  I'm wondering if anyone can advise as to how I can find out where he was imprisoned, for how long etc?  It was a huge family secret, my mum and uncle, as children, were told he had gone "away on business to America"!!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Wendy

The best place to get information in your case is the Local Newspaper.

Because of the large amount of money he embezzled, it was bound to appear on the front pages of the local newspaper and possibly in the National Dailies like the Times.    Times Index is on line, but not sure of its exact address at the moment.

The newspapers will give you all the details of the trial and should indicate his fate - either prison, deportation or whatever?.

The local newspaper archive should be available on film in your local library.

Prison records for 1920 will be closed. Your best bet would be to look at the newspapers for the area as well as the Times.

You could also contact the law society. I don't know if they will have any records, but if solicitors were registered at that time, they would presumably have some record of him being removed from the register.

Good Luck!
Regards,
Julie
