Hugh Douglas + Steam Boats
« on: Friday 15 October 04 20:08 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out more information about Hugh Douglas b1852 Holyhead, Anglesea. He married Annie Brown in 1888 in Bristol. At this time he was a 2nd Steward on a steam boat. I have them married on the 1891 census at 8 Kings Street Avonmouth West Gloucestershire but can not find him single in 1881.

I would like to know if anyone knows a way of finding out about steam boat crews/boats in 1888 as it might help me trace his whereabouts in 1881......really do not know where to start?? Do such records exist?

Thanks
:)

Douglas, Brown, Entwistle, Reed, Parsons, Copperwaite, Farrow, Barnes, Cowx, McCallum, Stobbart, Bowsell, Iredale, Marshall.

Hi there fellow Douglas. Dont know anything at all about Steamboats. Just been looking at 71 census and this is the only possible I can c in either England or Wales for Hugh even though it has absolutely nothing to do with the river or the Docks! Bit unspecified actually the son Wm is Store Keeper and the rest of family just line under. scan Enclosed

Thank you very much!   :D

I had already found Hugh in 1871 only last week by asking someone on the Lancashire pages. I did not have the scanned image though so am very grateful for that.  Below is the same family just prior to Hugh's birth on the 1851 census living at Stanley Row in Holyhead, Anglesea.  (Must be the same family)

William Douglas b c1813 Scotland
Catherine Douglas b c1817 Scotland
William Douglas b 1840 Scotland
James Douglas b 1942 Scotland
Andrew Douglas b1845 Scotland
Catherine Douglas b  c1847 Anglesea, Holyhead
Janet Douglas b1849 Anglesea, Holyhead

I had not found the Janet in 1881 though and I was not sure about Catherine and William in 1881 in Lancashire but it all coming together now!

Hugh in 1881 is still a mystery? He must be at sea or not listed for some reason???

Am now looking for the family in 1861 and looking for Catherine Senior's death certificate.

Thanks again

Lindsay Douglas

oh Right Lindsay ...I did wonder when I found the family in 1871 as I noticed there was another Hugh also born Holyhead!...i found him as 22 I think with a 57 year old wife..I had a look and coudnt really read the ages of this couple but decided that they were probably 38 (Hughs age certainly ends in 8 and 37 and they had a son Hugh as well...I wondered if it connected but didnt bother continuing with it till I heard from u...In this transcription I provided from 71 I also could not b sure if William was 30 or 38 . Its way passed ozzie bed time so will have a look 2morro to c if I can find the James and Andrew u mention here but with only Scotland to go on it probably wont b easy. Will get back to u if I find anything else i think may b of interest to u. As u say Hugh is probably away at sea and missed the census cas I tried everything I could think of to find him without success. I did notice the connections with the sea in these possible entries from 1881 also...Must b a Douglas thing my Douglas's were also sailors sadly origins unknown...My ggrandfather Henry Hamilton Doulas an American Midshipman is said to have jumped ship in Durham UK married a Durham Lass and came to Oz a few years later. His Father Was James a sea Captain. Family story has them as from Manhattan New York but alas it has never been proven. I presume they had came from Scotland originally with all the stories of the Black Douglas but we may never really know. Have been unable to locate them in USA unfortunately.. Anyway will get back to u if I find anything I think could be of interest on your Douglas's.
Cheers from Kris (born a Douglas) From South Australia  ;D

All very interesting!
 :D
I have traced my Douglas line back to the marriage of William Douglas (the head in the above census returns) in Aberdeen in 1839 (he was a Seaman then). I don't know where he was born in Scotland so the trail has run dry. Family rumour has it that we are from 'Black Douglas' origin but have a long way to go to prove that!

Thanks again and good luck with your research.
