Anyone live in or near Newtown, Sydney?
« on: Wednesday 26 April 06 09:55 BST (UK) »
I would love to find out whether the grave of my g-g-g-uncle William WEST still exists.  If it does, I would LOVE a photograph!  :D

I have just received the following info from the Society of Australian Genealogists:

Monumental Inscription
Sacred
to the Memory of
WILLIAM WEST
who departed this life
December...

Burial Butt
No. 5674  P.G. Sec 33  (the italics indicate handwriting on the printed form)
Camperdown Cemetery 14  (this written in another hand).

Interment took place 4pm, 17 Dec 1856.

Someone who's familiar with the cemetery might know whether the details on the Burial Butt relate to a grave location...perhaps "PG" stands for "Public Grave" - but then again William had a headstone, so sounds like he had his own plot...?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Thanks in advance
 :)

Hi Prue

Have you tried Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness
http://www.raogk.com/nsw.htm

There are a couple of Sydney folk who don't specify a particular cemetery.

Could the PG be Presbyterian General? Was the GGG Uncle from Scotland?

Hi Trish,
Thanks for the link, I'd forgotten about that bunch.
As far as I know, William was born in Manchester, but his family could be Scottish I suppose...I might write to the SAG again and see if they know what the code means.
Cheers
