Missing William Torvil Patterson last seen Victoria

I AM STILL LOOKING FOR THIS PERSON

Can anyone help to locate my missing Great Great Grandfather?

Been looking for him for years without success.

Here's what we know about him

William Torvil Patterson born 1858 in Sleswick Holstein Germany

parents are Petronilla (nee Larsen) and  Parker Nilson Patterson

William married 22 Sept 1886 in Ararat Victoria Australia to Mrs Eliza Fry Jones (nee Poad).

Eliza was a widow with 4 children, her first husband John Hugh Jones died from an accident in 1884.

4 children were born to William and Eliza, the last daughter born 1896

Family rumour has it that William deserted Eliza

1890 there is record in the Ballarat Directory of Mrs E Patterson living in Wills St, Ballarat no mention of Mr Patterson.

Can anyone help find William?

Any information or leads would be very welcome as we have hit a brick wall with this.

I would dearly love to know what became of my great grandfather.

Hi Greenemma

It's not him, but have you seen this in NAA: maybe connected:
http://naa12.naa.gov.au

PATTERSON WILLIAM TORVAL CLAUDE (born 1913 Ararat Victoria)
It's an open record - you can request it be digitised and placed on line.

But this website : his father is Piers Neil Torval PATTERSON b 1889.

Have you got Peers' marriage certificate - or death certificate
or Edna's 1896 birth certificate - to check what address  the parents were at
with death date we could look up 1921 death notice to see if father is mentioned

You only mention the address in 1890  but that is 6 years before the last birth
- the directory only mentions one  - as she was married before doesn't mean the  house got put into William's name - you need the electrol roll for 1899

what does Elizabeth's death certificate say - widow - divorcee?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply has given me a bit to think about and act on.

Peers died in Ararat, so I guess the death notice would be in the Ararat Newspaper?  I don't have access to looking that up.

No I haven't got Peer's marriage or death cert, as he is only a great Uncle, I didn't get them, likewise Edna's birth cert. Though I would try other options first.

Eliza (not Elizabeth) and her first Husband John Jones lived in Ararat, never in Ballarat.
So the house in Ballarat would have either been a rental or if owned would have been in the Patterson name.  The directory say Mrs E Patterson 1890 to 1906 at 35 Wills St, Ballarat East
1924 18 Wills St, Ballarat, perhaps the council renumbered the street, as they sometimes did when more houses were built or they extended the street.

I will look up the electrol roll next time I go the the Library, thanks for the suggestion it is much appreciated.

I know in Melbourne the new numbering system for house started in 1900
so maybe the same in ballarat

Do you have an exact date of death for either - my sister gets up to the library often - maybe she will check for you

Have you tried getting any certificates yet? The death certificate for his wife MAY indicate whether he was still living.

Have you checked the divorce records to see if they were divorced?

Funeral notices for his wife or children? Is he mentioned?

Naturalisation papers? If he wasn't naturalised, he wouldn't be on any electoral rolls

Perhaps you may be able to contact the people listed in them.

Good luck,
