Benjamin Russell Exeter Or Pinhoe
« on: Saturday 16 October 04 12:54 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather Benjamin (Edwin) Russell came from Bideford Devon and was on 1851 Census, with mother Charlotte Russell (Birthplace Pinhoe)widow and servant.
He was listed as 9 years old, birthplace Exeter.  If anyone can help me find anything about his birth, or his father, (also Benjamin) or his parents marriage I would appreciate it.

I tried to get his birth certificate but it came back negative.

Thanks Liz  :)

Hi, a bit of a tenuous link, but I have a Decima Russell from Exeter who married John Morgan PINN ca 1865.

Decima's parents were John RUSSELL and Eliza.

John and Eliza had 8 girls and only one boy that I have found (John Thomas born 1833)

I'm not actively researching this family, as it's not part of my direct line, but all the information I obtained was from familysearch.org.
If you've not searched the IGI, it might be worth you doing so, as the Exeter records seem quite abundant.

If you'd like all the info I do have (only names and birth dates) let me know and I'll post it for you.

Tonia.

Thanks for the thought Tonia and I will think about it. My Benjamin's father was supposed to be Benjamin too.

I have checked the IGI but no Benjamin Russell matches for Exeter or any for Devon, although a few in other places.  I have thought about getting the Exeter parish church reel at the LDS local library as I can't think of any other way to go further with this line.

His mother came from Pinhoe and I have been told this is a very tiny place, so more likely to find the information on her.

Does anyone have any idea if this is correct?

Hi Liz.
Coincidently, I live in Pinhoe. When Charlotte was born it would have been a tiny village with two pubs, a blacksmith, farms and of course, the parish church. The parish church is St. Michael and All Angels. Pinhoe is now a part of Exeter.

Good luck with your research!!

Hi Ryan

I will get there one day to see all of this, so thank you for the glimpse into the area.  I am in Australia so research is very long distance!  You say that Pinhoe is a busy bustling area.  Is it very far from Exeter? I know I have alot more to learn about the area and I think perhaps that might be my next research project, just to get the feel of the place.

Thanks for your help!

Pinhoe is the north-easternmost part of Exeter, and it's one of the city's largest 'chunks'. In other words, it's a suburb. Pinhoe has been, for a long time now, one of the most desirable urban places in the County to live.

I'm glad I could be of help, and I wish you the best of luck with your research!!
