Edward White-London and Essex
« on: Monday 01 May 06 01:35 BST (UK) »
 :D Hi there
Looking for information on an Edward White, a professional boxer from London circa the early 1900s.
He apparently owned various pubs in London and Essex, and due to self abuse died at an early age although it is unclear where or when.
Rumour has it that he was a Lonsdale Belt Holder.
Thanks

Hi fm and welcome to RootsChat !  :)

Was Edward White his real name or boxing name? maybe an email to the British Boxing Board of Control might give you some answers !

http://www.bbbofc.com/

also this is the boxing encyclopedia - maybe it will give you some clues !

But I wonder if you have tried to find him in the census as you said he owned a pub - might be worth going that way !!

Thank you Liverpool Annie and Cep

Nice to know theres people on the case.

This sounds like the Edward White I was looking for at the pub in Walthamstow in 1925. I am under the impression he also owned a few more about this time too. The Gunners has been mentioned. Ive looked it up by Arsenel Football ground, but no proof as yet.
I am not aware of his boxing title, if he had one, but do know that he was quite the bigwig in thoses days, often turning up in a very flashy car that would make all the road stop and stare.
Apparently there is also a Rochford, Essex connection. He apparently owned a pub there as well.
He must have been quite well off through his fighting purse money.
Am trying to find his birth and death but have no idea how old he was when fighting. Will e-mail the board of control as you suggested regarding the Lonsdale Belt connection. They may fill in some blanks.
Any more info would be great. Cheers for looking.

just been browsing and came upon your post although it was a few years ago so I'm not sure you will look at this now but here goes. My Grandfather was Edward White b.1867 St.Martin in the Field [Strand] London and died in 1935 Rochford Essex. He was a Publican and Amateur and later professional Boxer. The earliest I have on him is the 1891 Census where he was living in Walthamstow with his 1st. wife Elizabeth. He later married my Grandmother Alice in 1903. Before 1891 he proves to be elusive and I cant find any trace of him. I hope you see this and if he is indeed the same Edward I'm looking for perhaps you maybe able to shed some more light on this.

Antoinette,
Could this be your Edward, 1881 with parents John and Sarah at st George martyr, London? Says born st martins. Where did he marry Elizabeth or your grandmother? If it was in Essex, could look for marriage record and check father’s name.
Was your grandmother Alice Maude? There’s an Alice maude with an Edward white born st Martin in the fields, living in 1911 in Southwark.

Hallo Nanny
Looking at the 1881 census it could fit but looking at Edward,s fathers occupation as Shoemaker it doesn't fit with my mothers info. She always said Edwards father was a clerk in the City and on his marriage to Alice which took place in Mile End Reg.Office in 1903, he lists his father as 'Messenger at the House of Lords'. He also stated he was a widower, although I cant find a record of Elizabeth's death or their marriage. I remember my mother saying that her Dad's uncle was a Shoemaker, so it is all a bit confusing.I think its strange though, if this is true, that 2 brothers had a son at the same time and place and called him Edward. So as you can see its all a bit of a puzzle! If you can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately I can’t get to any London original records.
You could apply for Edward’s birth record from GRO? I think it’s about £10 if you’re prepared to wait fifteen working days. Otherwise, I think it’s £25?
That would give you his mother and father’s name.
We could then search census records with that additional info?
You could also post on the London board here, and copy and paste a link to this thread? Maybe someone there can look at the st Martin in the field’s records?
