david, this blokes a mystery, hes in the MICs but no sign of him in the census, there were 11 men called hursell who served in ww1,and 6 of them are not in the census, its possible that most of these hursells are related,in the MIC cards theres a noah hursell,he was 65 when he went off to war, ernest charles hursell who appears to be related to him, also served and so did ernests two lads, charles and frank, all survived,i think your man was either out of the country in 1901 probably in SA or he wasnt born till after the census, which would mean he was far too young to serve,he would have been about 17 in 1918,your man was renumbered which means he was serving in early 1916,we need the help of the census busters on here,i think theres a lot of history behind that medal, but we need to find g.j hursell in the census, mack

Here's Ernest in 1901:

RG13/794/45/19 - Black Griffin Lane, Canterbury
Ernest C Hursell  Head  28  Signalman Railway  b Horsmonden, Kent
Elizabeth Hursell  Wife  32  b Saplehurst, Kent
Elsie M Hursell  Dau  6  b Cranbrook, Kent
Charles E Hursell  Son  5  b Cranbrook, Kent
Frank W Hursell  Son  2  b Sandwich, Kent

With his parents in 1881:
RG11/923/85/2 - Goudhurst Rd, Horsmonden
John Hursell  Head  38  Ag Lab  b Horsmonden
Sarah Hursell  Wife  40  b Edenbridge, Kent
John Hursell  Son  20  Ag Lab  b Horsmonden
Jane Hursell  Dau  14  b Horsmonden
Ernest Hursell  Son  Scholar  8
Charlotte Hursell  Dau  3m  b Horsmonden

Not found "GJ" yet - or how this bunch fit together - but hang on while I fetch my daughter from kindergarten, and I'll see what else I can come up with!

thats them MR,ernest was one of 11 kids, james william was born 16-8-56,then from 1860 till 1874 mrs hursell was under siege from mr hursell and had NINE more kids, josiah 10-7-60,john 1861,elizabeth sarah 13-1-63,albert collin 8-6-64,jane francis 28-7-67,edwin george 29-8-69,harriett matilda 4-6-71,ernest charles 30-6-72, hugh isaiah 21-5-74,then mr hursell kindly let mrs hursell get her breath back, and then charlotte came along on 6-1-81,i expect she saved quite a few bob on shoes as she doesnt seem to have been out of bed long enough to wear a pair, the poor lady, mack

Ernest also had a few half-siblings, including Noah - John had a different wife in 1851!

HO107/1615/503/1 - Heath Cottages, Horsmonden
John Hursell  Head  29  Ag Lab  b Horsmonden
Maryann Hursell  Wife  29  b Horsmonden
Henry Hursell  Son  5  b Horsmonden
Emily Hursell  Dau  2  b Horsmonden
Noah Hursell  Son  11m  b Horsmonden

This one obviously wasn't as resistant as Sarah!   ;D

I've found the family on all censuses except 1841 - let me know if you need details.  Will look for "GJ" when I get a chance...
