EDMONDS, GG arrival between 1850-1857
« on: Tuesday 02 May 06 12:14 BST (UK) »
Good mornng Members,

I have been unable to locate the actual arrival in Australia of my GGrandfather George Gilbert EDMONDS.

He was born in Wexford IRE between 1825-1833.  He married in Sydney in 1857, moved to Brisbane and is buried in South Brisbane Cemetery.

George Gilbert EDMONDS was said to be a crewman on HMS JUNO but many, many searches in that regard have proved fruitless.

Any snippett of information will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

EDO

Do you mean the Juno was in Australian waters or British?

There is a George Edmonds, born Wexford Ireland, date is 1876 (not sure what this refers to) on the PRO, documents online for Naval records.

George Edmonds, age 20 years, arrived on ship "Herefordshire" in 1853.

Reel no. 2137  (NSW State Archives)

Maybe he could be your man.  Maybe someone could look up that film reel at State Records or the NSW State Library for you, for extra details.

Hello Cazay,

Many thanks for your response.

There were a number of ships bearing the name JUNO in Australian waters.  The HMS JUNO was prominent in research particularly in West Australian waters and Cocus Islands under Captain FREEMANTLE.

The HMS JUNO subsequently became a British training ship, renamed "ATLANTA" and disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle with all naval cadets.

Her visits to Australia included -
HMS JUNO was in Australian Waters as part of the Admiralty Fleet in 1856

.................
CAZAY:  What would assist me greatly would be to find the names of the crew of the HMS JUNO during those periods.
There were pasengers brought to Australia on HMS ships in those days also.

Thanks once again

Hello Curious Diana,

Thank you for your research.

I would truly like to have a search of the Archives for the 1853 "HEREFORDSHIRE" visit crew/passengers, if someone is able to assist in that regard.

""George Edmonds, age 20 years, arrived on ship "Herefordshire" in 1853.
Reel no. 2137  (NSW State Archives)""

with sincere thanks
