looking for GIBLINS
« on: Tuesday 02 May 06 17:00 BST (UK) »
I am looking for Giblin relatives who came from Galway to England around the 1860s/1870s. I have no idea of the town they came from. They moved to Durham and I know they were they by 1880 as that's when my G grandfather William Giblin married my G grandmother Jane McVey.

I know the later generations were workers in the shipping industry and think earlier generations may have done too.

I know this is vague but I hope someone can help.

Thanks for looking Annie.

Sadly I have no way of knowing. I only know some details of Giblins once they reached England and my branch of the family then moved to Wales. I know they came from Galway as it was mentioned on an English census.

I was kinda hoping there might be someone who was researching the Giblins who might recognise the name and the area they moved to in England.

They'll be good to keep on the back burner - you never know !!  ;)

We try to help people research their own family themselves and not rely on somebody turning up - it's much more fun that way !!  :) :)

Do you have any census ' at all for your William and Jane ?

Here is what I know of the family.

My grandfather, HENRY JOSEPH GIBLIN was born in Newport, Wales, 1899.
His parents, WILLIAM THOMAS GIBLIN and JANE McVEY, were married in South Shields in 1880. William was born around 1860 and Jane was born in 1864.

I have a copy of my G grandparents wedding certificate and the name is spelt GIBLIN.
In the 1891 & 1901 censuses I have found the spelling the same.

I have found a census for 1881 and all the details fit although they are called GIBBLING.

The head of the family in 1881 is THOMAS GIBLIN or GIBBLING. He was 59 (b1822) and was born in GALWAY, IRELAND. He was married to MARGARET, also from Galway.

My G grandfather WILLIAM is described on censuses as being born in CHESHIRE, RUNCORN or DURHAM, HEBBURN NEWTOWN. I've looked in the BMD indexes and can't find anything that fits this information. If he was born in England the family should be in the 1861 & 1871 censuses but I can't find them. I'm still working through trying various spellings.

I'm pretty clueless as to where to look next. Any suggestions greatfully received.
