john bettesworth of chichester
« on: Saturday 06 May 06 15:00 BST (UK) »
John Bettesworth, my 5xGreatgrandfather, was a surgeon who ended up living at St.Hilary in Cornwall. He recieved his Licence to practice in 1709. He died in 1743 so have estimated his birth as C.1680. His wife's name was Christian.
Both buried at St.Hilary, Cornwall. The licence issue mentions him as a Quaker of Hampshire. Any help with finding his baptism or marriage greatly appreciated. This has been a brickwall for over 20 years.
His second marriage in Cornwall resulted in a daughter named Sandys. Quite an unusual name if this helps in associating with other Bettesworth lines.
Thansk, Roy White :)

Hi Roy
Where does Chichester come in? It's in West Sussex not Hampshire. Does have very strong Quaker connections though.

 ;D

Do you have some reason to believe he was born in Chichester? He might easily have moved a few miles up the road so being 'of Hampshire' by the time he got his licence. Chichester was a Quaker stronghold in the 17th century.

Hi Jan,
Thanks for your continued effort to sort me out.
On the Lambeth Palace site, that lists people granted a licence to pratice, there are 2 entries for John Bettesworth.
One is of Chichester and the other Quaker of Hampshire.
Of his first marriage I have baptisms for the third and fourth child at St.Hilary. The first 2 may have been baptised elsewhere. Their births estimated at 1701 and 1715.
I am aware that the family is much bigger than I thought at first. Never having heard the name I thought it might be quite small and easy to locate. The only other one in Cornwall is another John at Caerhays. Quite a large mansion there, but no apparent connection. Just to confuse matters ,every time I do a search on the internet I get loads for a John Bettesworth, but he was a legal person who appears on very many wills.
Thanks again, Roy :)

My readiing is that he is the same person - appearing under Sussex and Hampshire but only listed once under the surname index. I assume this is because he was from Chichester originally moved to Hampshire and practiced in both counties. Do you have a copy of the full declaration? If not it might clarify things.
On the IGI there are quite a few John Bettesworth in Chi area

Daisy this is the site

Hi Jan,
Thanks for your reply.
No, I haven't got a full copy of the declaration.
I have tried lately to get access into the site (Lambeth Palace) but have not got further than the first page.
From the web address you have supplied it seems that I will be able to order the copy. I will do so shortly and as you say it may well help the situation.
I will let you know how I get on. Don't know how long that will take though.

Thanks again for your continued interest.
Best wishes, Roy :)

Hi Roy
Hope it clarifies things. If it turns out he is from Chichester I can do a lookup for you at the Records Office.
