1891 WOVENDEN Liverpool (?)
« on: Sunday 07 May 06 09:51 BST (UK) »
apologies, this should be in the requests section  :-[ would it be possible for the moderators to move it ? thanks

The following couple married in W.Derby in 1889:

Alfred Martin WOVENDEN (bn 1856, Liverpool)
Janetta Middlecott PLANE (bn 1863, Liverpool) (sometimes 'Jenetta')

They migrated to Canada, Alfred in 1893, Janetta following in 1894.

In 1881 Alfred had been living with his family at '179 Islington', Liverpool, and Janetta ('Janette') at '330 Kensington', West Derby, which I assume is also Liverpool.

In the Canadian 1901 census Alfred unaccountably seems to be listed as 'Robert'.

I'd be very grateful if someone could find them in 1891  :)

TIA

Hi there
I did a full county search of 1891 through 1837online.com site but could not find Alfred Wovenden anywhere, When I put in  the surname only still didn't get any results. Sorry

thanks for looking Sammiboy.

I have since found an entry in an 1894 trade directory as follows:

15 Riverdale Road (Seacombe) [Birkenhead]
Wovenden Mrs

17 Riverdale Road
Plane Wm Thos bookkeeper

(Kelly's Directory of Liverpool & Birkenhead, 1894.)

This is Janetta living next to her parents, after Alfred left for Canada, and ... it's in Cheshire   ::)

Maybe they were there in 1891 ?! (I know it's not Lancashire  :D)

Hi Hugh
It is a wonder they didn't show up in the 1891 census when an advance search in every county was done. Still there are always mysteries in genealogy. Happy hunting.  Sammiboy

Hi,

The Mrs. Wovenden you have found in 1894 MAY be her mother in law.  In the 1891 the widowed Mary Wovenden born 1822ish  is also living in Seacombe at 76 Littledale Road with daughter Isabella and nephews Earnest Nial Wovenden aged 17 born Plymouth Devon and William Patterson, 24, Lancashire Bootle.

There is also a Married Mary Wovenden aged 36 born Liverpool in Seacombe with
Daughters Florence Ethel 8 and Lilian Maudly? 6.

No sign of your Alfred/Robert or Janette though.

Regards,
Mo

Thanks for that Mo  :)

Mary born c1822 died in 1891. There is a Miss Wovenden at the address in Littledale Road in the 1894 Directory. (could be Isabella or Fanny?).

Mary aged 36 was the wife of Alfred's brother Harry, who would have been away at sea. Lilian Maud was my wife's grandmother.

Mrs Wovenden still could be Janetta, but I mustn't jump to conclusions :D

Hi Hugh,

Take a look at 1891 England Census.

Cheshire>Poulton with Seacombe> District 21

I think this is your family but badly transcribed as 'Afret M Worden' and wife as 'Annette' living at 15 Riversdale Road, Seacombe, Wallasey, Cheshire.

There's also  the Liverpool Electoral Register for 1889-1890 which shows Alfred Martin Wovenden living at 1 Port View, Seacombe, Lancs.

Hope this helps.

Wow thanks  :) That's an old thread! I'll pass this on to my sister-in-law in Canada who is the genealogist for my wife's family.

Are you interested in the Wovenden family?

Hi Hugh

Yes, I have Wovendens in my family tree (Great x2 grandmother) and they spelled their name in many different ways over the years, eg Wovinden, Woffenden, Wolfenden etc. I found your missing 1891 couple by using a wildcard W*d?n for the surname in Ancestry - which technique has found quite a few of my ancestors.

PS I lived in Sheffield throughout the 1970's - small world  :)
