Sutcliffes of Rock Ferry, Wirral.
« on: Sunday 07 May 06 18:27 BST (UK) »
Has any one got any further information regarding the Sutcliffe family who lived in Rock Ferry around 1890-1920. Jacob and Mary Ellen Sutcliffe (nee Smith) had three sons-Harold, Percy and Charles. Jacob was originally from Ireland and was a book keeper. He died in 1921. Percy (born 1893) was my grandfather, he married Dorothy Underwood (born 1901) of Hoole, Chester, in 1926 and they lived in Heygarth Road, Eastham. He worked for the Great Western Railway at Morpeth Dock, Birkenhead and died in 1961.

I am particularly interested in finding out more about Jacob, Mary Ellen and Harold.

Since you first posted in 2006 .....

Harold is the son of his second wife Margaret Charlotte Cuttle he was born 2 July 1886 (railway records)
GRO Index 1886 Birkenhead mothers maiden name Cuttle.

Margaret presumably died in childbirth or complications thereof. death recorded Birkenhead 1886 as Charlotte Margaret Sutcliffe age 29.

Jacob Sutcliff wd. married Margaret 24 December 1876 at Everton his father Joseph -farmer. Her father Frank - optician. Witness Kate Cuttle.

Notes Harold's birth answers the question why did Mary Ellen write originally on 1911 census 3 children,2 living,1 deceased, and it was written over as 4 children, 3 living 1 deceased.
Noted another son Francis born 1880 mmn Cuttle ,buried Everton 23 March 1881 age 1

His first wife
Isabella Jane Story married 30 December 1868 registered Monaghan Ireland
Her death recorded 1872 age 23 Monaghan Ireland

They had a son Robert Joseph Sutcliffe possible birth 15 May 1871 Monaghan Ireland.

1891 census he is a boarder age 21 living in Birkenhead.

He enlists 8 October 1891 states born Scotstown Monaghan Ireland next of kin Jacob Sutcliffe of 18 Jackson Street Birkenhead.
This is the same street where the family was living in 1890 when Lily was baptized.
Robert had previously served and was declared unfit and discharged 14 October 1891.

Chelsea pension record 1890 has birth place Kilcooly Tipparary, but same contact Jacob Sutcliffe, bookkeeper of 40 Jackson Street Birkenhead. Each time he enlists he is a Grocer's assistant
