1871 census: Henry BUTLER
« on: Monday 18 October 04 17:38 BST (UK) »
Dear All,

I've used the free Ancestry features to try to track down my most elusive g-grandfather, Henry BUTLER, in 1871.  I have four possible records, and would be most grateful if someone could check them for me.  I've ordered them in my best guess of most to least likely:

1. RG10/635, page 61, household schedule no. 332 (Bermondsey, London)
2. RG10/1306, page 9, household schedule no. 51 (Staines, London)
3. RG10/2131, page 34, housefold schedule no. 241 (Stoke Damerel, Devon)
4. RG10/564, page 26, household schedule no. 142 (Mile End Old Town, London)

The correct Henry should have the following characteristics:

Born: Chelsea, or possibly Westminster, Middlesex/London
Age: Between 23 and 29 (he was very inconsistent in later censuses!)
Occupation: Actor, Artist, or Comedian
Marital status: Married.

Many thanks for your assistance.

All the best

Hi Ruth,

Thanks for your effort.  Henry's wife was Margaret, but I already have her in 1871 - alone in a boarding house  :'(

And their first son was born about 6 months later.

As both Margaret and Henry were actors (well, she was an actress if you're British, only an actor if you're American!), I theorize that Henry was off performing on census night somewhere too far to get back to his wife.  But that means he could be anywhere, and Ancestry has only a partial indexing, I believe.

Cheers

Tim,

Sorry to cut in, but I am trying to locate a William Steven Butler b. 1820 ish, was possibly a Doctor as listed as ships surgeon on the Arab bound for New Zealand in 1841.

Have no knowledge of his life in UK, so just grapping at straws.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your efforts.

I don't think any of these look right .... though it had never occurred to me that my g-grandfather could have been a woman  ;D

Three problems have totally stumped me with Old 'Enry:

a) He has a very common name;
b) I have failed to locate his marriage certificate to Margaret, hence I don't know his father's name (see separate thread from a week or so ago in The Common Room); and
c) Because he was so inconsistent with his age on census returns ('81, '91', 01), I can't even narrow it down very much to a likely birth year.

After pondering over this for a looooooong time, I do have a particular birth record which I consider the most likely, but I haven't even ordered the certficate yet in case it sets me off - all excited - down a totally false line of research!

I guess I'm going to have to be patient until the '51 or '61 censuses are fully indexed.

Thanks again.
