VESEY-HOWISON St Cuthberts wedding followed by Carnwath wedding
« on: Thursday 11 May 06 19:04 BST (UK) »
HI
Archibald Vesey and Janet Howison
were married on 17.10.1831 at St Cuthbert's Edinburgh
and subsequently  on 21.10.1831 at Carnwath, which is just over 25 miles south-west of Edinburgh.
I could not see any details of either's parents on the records I saw.

Do you have any record of either of these people?

I have found reference to Thomas Prentice and Helen Howison and their son Archibald in Carnwath in 1802 - are these people relatives to Janet? Could Helen be an aunt or an older sister to Janet?

And what of Archibald Vesey? He and Janet moved to Partick, where their son Alexander (b. 1842) married an Englishwoman called Caroline Street.
Was there other offspring?

Moderator Comment: If anybody can help, then please check out the thread on the Lanarkshire Board as well, to avoid duplication of efforts. Thanks :)

southbabs,

PROCLAMATION OF BANNS
What you see in the Old Parish Registers (and thus the IGI) pre-1855 is normally only the Proclamation of Banns.  The reason for two entries is because Banns were proclaimed in both the bride's parish and the groom's parish.  Occasionally the fact that a marriage did then actually take place (and perhaps even the date) will be recorded in the register.  It is very unlikely that names of parents would be mentioned.

CHILDREN OF ARCHIBALD & JANET
If you do a parent search in the IGI (International Genealogical Index) at FamilySearch:
http://www.familysearch.org
you will find records of four children to Alexander and Janet (enter Alexander Vesey in the father boxes and Janet Howison in the mother boxes, select British Isles as the region - fortunately various spellings of Alexander's surname are combined in the IGI).
Agnes VESSIE bap 11 Dec 1831, Carnwath Lanarkshire
Mary Scott VESEY bap 14 Apr 1840, Dalkeith Midlothian
Alexander Howison VESEY bap 5 Jul 1842, Dalkeith Midlothian
Jessie Nichol VESEY bap 14 Dec 1845, Dalkeith Midlothian

1841 CENSUS
A search of the 1841 census on FreeCEN :
http://www.freecen.org.uk
finds (ages of persons aged over 15 were rounded downto the nearest 5 in the 1841 census):
Taits St, Dalkeith Midlothian
VESEY Archibald, 30, Inn Keeper, born in Scotland but not in Midlothian
VESEY Janet, 30, born in Scotland but not in Midlothian
VESEY Agnes, 9, born in Scotland but not in Midlothian
VESEY Mary, 1, born Midlothian
SMITH Mary, 20, Female servant, born Midlothian
GORDON Margaret, 10, Female servant, born Midlothian

SCOTLANDSPEOPLE
Your best bet is to go to the (pay per view) site ScotlandsPeople at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
There you can search for Archibald and family in the various censuses.
You can also search for the deaths of Archibald and Janet.  Their death certificates should list the name and occupation of the father of the deceased, and the name and maiden surname of the mother of the deceased.

DEATH OF JANET?
A free search (you need to register but that too is free) on ScotlandsPeople shows only one result for the death of a Janet VESEY, other name HOWISON, between 1855 (the start of Statutory Registration) and 1900.  Refining the search terms, shows that this Janet died in 1866 with age recorded as 60.

BAPTISM OF JANET?
Archibald and Janet named their first daughter Agnes.  Scottish naming patterns (commonly, but not always, observed) would suggest that this was the name of Janet's mother.

A search in the IGI on FamilySearch for the birth/baptism of a Janet HOWISON, mother Agnes, 1810 +/- 10 years gets only one hit:
Janet HOWISON bap 5 May 1805, Carnwath Lanark, parents Alexander HOWISON and Agnes GIRDWOOD
These parents had (all in Carnwath):
Mary HOWISON bap 20 Jan 1799
Agnes HOWISON bap 19 Oct 1800
Elizabeth HOWISON bap 3 Jul 1803
Janet HOWISON bap 5 May 1805
Mary HOWISON bap 13 Mar 1808 (presumably the first Mary did not survive)
Kathrine HOWISON bap 1814
They may well also have had sons - this is one of those annoying IGI batches where only the females have been entered into the online IGI.

You will be able to check whether Janet's parents were Alexander HOWISON and Agnes GIRDWOOD when you view/download Janet's death certificate from ScotlandsPeople.

BAPTISM OF JANET'S MOTHER?
As Agnes named her first daughter Mary (and re-used the name) it suggests that her mother was possibly named Mary.  An IGI search for the birth/baptism of an Agnes GIRDWOOD with mother Mary brings up the following likely record:
Agnes GIRDWOOD bap 2 Jun 1776, Carnwath Lanark, parents David GIRDWOOD and Mary WALLACE.

David GIRDWOOD married (or Banns were proclaimed) Mary WALLACE 9 May 1775, Pettinain Lanark.

ALEXANDER VESEY & CAROLINE STREET
From the IGI, Alexander Howison VESEY and Caroline STREET had a son Alexander Mitchell VESEY born 28 Apr 1873 in Edinburgh Midlothian.

Have fun!

Few years late in replying here, but just saw this...Jessie Vesey is my Great Grandmother, Janet Howie my Great Great Grandmother... Jessie Vesey died in Gourock or at least is buried in Gourock along with my Great Grandfather Robert Sim..both died in the the 1940s. I can add this info to my family tree now, thank you. Alexanders father Archibald Vesey spent many years as a butler. Alexander married in England in c1873  ..he was a soldier at Aldershot 50th Queens Own Infantry in the 1871 census   Angela

Jessies father in law, John Sim is an elusive character, John Sim didnt marry his childrens mother Isabella Agnew....He was born we think about 1840 couldnt read or write, Isabella was still Agnew when she died, their 2 children Robert and John both born 1860s,on various census are either Sim or Agnew...trying to find their father Johns death cert is very hard. One John Sim did die at Carnwrath.......so I wonder if that cert is worth looking at ?? Another one is the poor house in Govan  :'(
