1841 census Sackville street
« on: Saturday 13 May 06 09:49 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I thought I would give one of my brickwalls a go on here.
Frances KEENE married in 1838 in St James Westminster. On the Parish Register,  her father was given as John Keene, Tailor and their address was 22 Sackville street.  I have been told this was a haven for Tailors at the time.  Could SKS check that address for me on the 1841 census please, to see if they were still there 3 years later.   I have never been able to crack this family.
Many thanks in advance
Sunny

Thanks Jennifer, for the lookup.
I have been dying for the 1841 to come out to try and attack a few brick walls. There's that idea down the drain. Grin..
Thanks anyway and happy hunting.

I did note that a death for a John Keene was reg. June  qtr 1839 Marylebone 1/131.

Perhaps he died before the 1841 census?

There is no question on an English marriage certificate which asks whether either father was still alive at the time of the marriage, merely his name and his occupation. Some people volunteered the extra information that he was dead and some officials chose to add the information deceased and some did not. Some officials asked this additional information and many did not. Therefore unless you have evidence from another source there is no guarantee John Keene was still alive in 1838 unless for instance he was one of the witnesses that signed the certificate?

Sackville Street is near Piccadilly in Westminster so the Keenes would have to have moved to Marylebone for a death to have been registered in that district. If John was alive in 1838 and died before the 1841 census then this death registration in the Westminster area is just as likely to be a possibility.

Deaths Mar 1841
KEENE  John     Strand  1 373

Do you have Frances' baptism and hence know her mother's name or that of any of Frances' siblings?

Regards

Valda

Frances was born approx 1816-1819 (on marriage cert "of full age" father John Keene, Tailor, 22 Sackville St)
She married Thomas Stroud "of full age" Coach maker of 13 Swallow st, father  Thomas Stroud coachmaker

on24 sep 1838, St James Westminster
She signed with an "x" Thomas signed: Witnesses James Allen, Nancy Smith (both signed)

Ive never found any baptism or other family for her

Incidentally in 1841 Francis and Thomas were living in Bosham Sussex shortly prior to settling in Thomas's home town of Chichester

Hi,

In 1811 Holdens Directory there was a company listed called Keene,Keene & Horsepool Tailors & Habit Makers
39 Tavistock Street Covent Garden which is in Westminster?

Could be a red herring but I give it for your information.
