Harry LORD - Boer War
« on: Tuesday 10 January 06 09:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi Izabel

I wonder if you could see if you could find my grandfather Harry Lord listed anywhere in connection with serving in the Boer War.  (Going back through my records I have found a reference to Bethune's Mounted Infantry and "Harry Lord no 472" - maybe this will help).

He was born in the Ovenden area of Halifax, West Yorkshire in April 1874, the middle child of John and Mary Ann nee Clarke.

According to family history he went off to South Africa and was involved in "some" fighting.  He returned circa 1903/4 with a 3/4 year old daughter but NOT with the child's mother.  According to my cousin her mother was born at Pietermaritzburg on 21.1.1900 and her mother was called Phoebe Charlotte.  That is all the information I have.

Apparently Granddad's legs were always bandaged due to injuries sustained in battle but I know nothing else.

Granddad died in 1951 and his occupation was a retired worsted warp twister so I don't believe he had a trade of any sort.

I'd also like to know, if anyone else can tell me, how he managed to stay in SA after the end of the Boer War and how did he manage to bring his daughter back into this country without a passport etc ???

Many thanks
Jan  ;D

Hello Mack

His siblings were called Jim and Hannah, who was his sister  ;) and Harry was the middle child.

He also had 3 half sisters and 1 half brother but they weren't called Lord.

Does this ring a bell with you?

Jan
