PENFOLD-1918 absent voters list

Hi everyone
I have been reading that if you have the name and address of a person  who away during WW1, that by using the absent voters list of 1918 , you may be able to find out the regiment, rank and number of that person.
I am still trying to find out who William Penfold served with.!  I have spent hours this morning on the phone to the  Truro County Records Office, the City Council, Library Services and have also googled just about everything but to no avail.
I am hoping someone can help me.

The information that i have regarding  William Penfold is :
born abt 1873 in St Austell
Parents: Thomas and Sophia Penfold
spouse: Bessie Penfold (nee Palmer)
address (in 1901): 27 Calenick street
                              Kenwyn

Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have the address where William was living in 1918 and have the relevant departments checked that address?

sorry the only info i have is that from the census ...1901. most of his children were born and died in kenwyn, truro , cornwall. so i am assuming (!?) that they all lived at that address whilst he was at war.
sorry that i cannot provide any other details, other than he was a gypsy prior to marrying bessie palmer who was a house dweller.

ps i also called the cornish studies center and the kenwyn local library today as well as the other places that i posted in my 1st message...and no-one could help me except to advise me to call the national arcchives. i have not done this as i am sure i will be on hold forever.

Ok, did you manage to find out where the old local electoral registers (if they survive) are held?  Very often the absent voter's list is not a separate item but included with the main electoral register for 1918+.

It might also be worth mentioning that, very often, these are still unindexed and in their original format ie. arranged in chronological order (house to house) with no surname indexes hence the requirement to know exactly where somebody lived without quite a search.  Hoever, local street directories can often be a shorcut for an address - if the family didn't move around too much.

Hi achoo,

I recently found that William Penfold served with the Army Service Corps (ASC) as a private. He was discharged on 25 Feb 1916 due to "sickness". He enlisted on 15 July 1915.
