Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anyone would be able to provide me with a digital photograph of a gravestone in the churchyard of St. Peter's in Woolton, Liverpool?

Of course I would be delighted as it lists my great grandparents and 3 of their children, but my main purpose is to try and gather evidence to support my request to get some information on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site revised to correctly show a dead soldier's full name and parents' names, if possible. A photo of this gravestone may help me as it mentions his death, his regiment and his full name (albeit only as initials ::) )

Anyway, I can't expect the CWGC to simply take my word for it, so I should try to gather some evidence to support my request. So far I only have his name on his birth certificate, his name on the 1901 Census and his name from a transcription of the gravestone. I though that a photo of the gravestone would be more compelling.

If anyone could kindly help me with this matter, I would of course be extremely grateful. It is rather sad when a dead soldier's information is not recorded in a fully accurate form.

If you can help me, please send me a PM and I will provide you with the full details.
Thank you so much,

UKgirl

Hi UKgirl.

I hope you have more success than I did!.

Last year I noted the death of an Australian officer listed
on the CWGC website showing 'age unknown' I provided
the CWGC with a birth date from my BD&M but they wrote
back to me saying they can only make changes if they sight
the original certificate, so I sent their letter onto the NSW
registrar asking them to provide the details direct from the
registry to the CWGC, but nothing has ever been done!.

It is a shame that these men cannot have their details
recorded correctly, and I do understand that they cannot
simply accept someones word, but when proof is evident,
I wonder at the bureaucracy!.

Good luck anyway!.

Mike.

Thank you for your query, Heyesie.

I did contact them and they provided me with his enlistment details.
I then asked for the names of his next of kin, but I received no reply.

He seems to have joined up and thus died under a nickname (shortened name) and so I wish to have his full name recorded, if possible, with his parents' names, if possible.

I thus need to prove that man A is in fact man B. Since his gravestone (obviously not his actual grave, just "in memory of" ....) backs up the regiment death records, I thought that a photo of it would help me to prove my point.

Hello Mike,

Please don't give up.
Why don't you buy a copy of the certificate yourself and send it to them? I know that that may seem a bit expensive, and I don't know how important your fellow is to you (actual relation or just a passing aquaintance on your family tree, as it were).

Leaving it up to the NSW Registrar actually seems like a good idea, but perhaps in fact they never did anything about it.
What do you think?

Hi UKgirl.

Actually the inquiry came from a frenchman that conducts battle
field tours, he was doing a story on this officer and somehow contacted me because I had most BD&M for Oz, and my name
must have been passed onto him.

It was many months later that I found a note I had made and
decided to act on it, I also no longer have the frenchmans name
or address, so it will have to remain as is.

I thought I would relate what the CWGC told me about making
changes and what was required before they were prepared to
do so.

You may have better luck as your inquiry relates to a UK death
and burial, I hope so.

I know that the UK National Archives will make changes to any
error in their records, my great uncle was incorrectly recorded
and once it was pointed out they corrected the error without
delay.

UKgirl,
send me a PM with as much information that you have, I will see if I can help you out, I did a similar task for a guy in  oz but it was a wasted journey as there was not enough info, but have had successes for others.
St Peters is not a big churchyard but info on names , DOB and grave number and or plot would be great.
Regards John

John, while you are there (if it stops raining) see if you can spot the elusive grave of Eleanor Rigby which prompted Paul McCartney to write the song.
