Do you have Great Eastern Railway connections
« on: Monday 22 May 06 00:00 BST (UK) »
I have picked up some bound copies of the Great Eastern Railway Magazine for the period of 1911 to 1917 and they have a wealth of information held within their pages for family research, marriages-retirements-obituaries-of members of staff of this railway are given with short bio's. Also included for the years between 1914 to 1917 are G.E.R. staff members who gave their life during those years of the Great War again these have small, limited bio's. All of this information has pictures of the staff member mentioned. If anyone  feels that their family members  have a connection with this company I am only too willing to do look ups and to send the info on.

A few of the names mentioned are Sapsford-Bugg-Damant-Canham-Wiffen-Butterworth-Trotman.

Old Rowley,
Where did the Great Eastern run (excuse my ignorance)?  My Bearman family lived in Greenwich and were railway workers. Is it a possible for them ?

In 1901 on the census, dad Frederick was a signal fitter and son William an engine cleaner.  By 1911 and the birth of William's son he is described as a railway porter.

Hello Siouxzie.
Try the Great Eastern Railway Society,I think they have a family history forum.
You'll find their site on the web.
Derek.

Hi Siouxzie,

The GER ran in the eastern region of essex/east anglia from Bishopsgate/liverpool st although they would and did have carriage offices else where (according to the magazines).

I have had a look at the index and can not see any mention of any Bearman's  in the magazines but if I find any I will let you know

Old Rowley  :-*

I have a John Reginald Tunbridge who worked for the Great Eastern Railway but I don't know when he joined, he was an employee in 1939 when he was mentioned in a family will.

He was born abt 1886 though, so could easily have been working for GER by 1911.

He married Ellen Cutter in October 1912.

I'm sure one of my Halle's also worked for them but the details are evading me at the moment.

Whenever you have time - no rush  ;D I'll keep eveything crossed.

Thanks!

Hi Steph,

sorry but I can not find any referrence to Cutter, Halle's or Tunbridge in the years that I have. The 1911 issues are not indexed by name so I will have to go through that one but a quick look again shows no mention of those names. When I go through it properly I will keep a look out for you.

hi Old Rowley

If you come across any mention of an Edwin Russell I would be extremely interested....

Believed to be Station Master at Tiptree for a time on the Kelvedon - Tollesbury light line (crab & winkle - not to be confused with the Kent crab & winkle)  Died in 1929 in Poplar.   (In 1901 he was Signalman - living in Bromley/Poplar - not sure when he was at Tiptree but assuming 1910-1920s)  I know he was GER because there are a couple of photos of him in his uniform with the lovely curly GER badges. ;)

Also, one of his son-in-laws, Absolom Springett - signalman in 1901 living Woolwich - but think he was GER as well.  The Springett family were originally from Rivenhall, Essex - not far from Tiptree.

Many thanks for your generous offer  :)
