Army Service
« on: Thursday 21 October 04 12:27 BST (UK) »
My Grandfather was John George THOMAS (though known as George). He served in the army during WWII. His date of birth 26/05/1889.

Family sources tell me that he was gassed during the war and was hospitalised in the U.K. for a time, so he may well have been discharged medically unfit. I have no idea what regiment he would have been in.

Is there any way of searching to confirm length of service and find out which regiment etc?

Thank you.
Thomas - Tranmere - Liverpool - Wales
Kirkby - Tranmere - Liverpool - Derbyshire
Kavanagh - Tranmere - Ireland
Mutton - Tranmere - Sunderland - Devon

Churchill - Birkenhead - Ireland
Lewis - Birkenhead - Chester
Craven - Birkenhead - Ireland
McMahon - Birkenhead - Ireland

If he served in WWI he earned medals. I am sure that you mean WWI although you write WWII - no gas was used in WWII and he would have been 50 when that war broke out. You can find details of them here:
http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk/medals.asp
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.
