Hi all.  I was in touch with my contact at Maidenhead Library re Tyrrells/Turrells Buildings.  Turns out the story about the Guards from Windsor came from two books, one of which is the one just mentioned.  I'll be getting a copy to see if any primary source was used or whether this is just speculation. What I have discovered just recently is that 'Barracks' was a term used widely at that time to decibel such accommodation.  The 1862 census for nearby Burnham records such a 'Barracks' with multiple occupancy.

It's very difficult to buy from here. They don't seem to have online 'shop'.
When I go home they are always shut. I have sent emails and got no reply..

Hello Everyone,

Maidenhead Voices is by Chrissy Rosenthal and Ann Danks and is from the Tempus Oral History Series.  I believe my daughter purchased it on-line from Amazon Books.

One of the things of particular interest to me was the flooding at Ray Park Cottages and punting down the road on builder's planks !  I can just imagine my mother being one of the children to do that.

Regards,

ANYAS

Imber,
That's interesting to hear.  And, having looked at the census and seeing the amount of people living in Tyrell's I think decibel was probably the right word!!!
Let's hope there is some authenticity to it,
Regards, Abiam

Although I don't think I remember the big floods, I certainly fed the swan's swimming in our back yard one winter.  :D

Maidenhead Heritage Centre has acquired a new permanent home in Park Street - a former pub and this is about to undergo refurbishment.  They are still fundraising for that!
