« on: Friday 26 May 06 16:27 BST (UK) »
Doe's anybody have any information on the Command of the 6th(Poona) Divisional Area at Poona, as written on a over seas birth certificate, date 1914
He is William Coombs Morey (Coy,Sgt Major Instr 34909)
A year earlier 1913 on a marriage cert he's in 82nd company R.G.A at Allahabad.
Why the change and what would he's occupation be. Iam trying to trace his death. ( I think he died in 1918).

Hi Belle,

Have a look at this page which shows the regiments that made up the 6th Poona Divisional Area;

http://www.warpath.orbat.com/indian_divs/6_ind_div_area.htm

The R.G.A. is the Royal Garrison Artillery;

The R.G.A was organised into Company's and Batteries.I'm certainly no expert on the Royal Artillery but I can't see the 82nd Company on that list of R.G.A units that I posted! ???

There is an 82nd Battery R.G.A that arrived 4th August 1914 at Ferozepore and part of the the 3rd (Indian) Division;

Hi Belle,

It confuses me too at times!  :P

I think I'll start again......

William Morey was a Company Sergeant Major, his regiment was the Royal Garrison Artillery and he was an instuctor, most probably an instructor of gunnery.

The link that I posted for the 6th Poona Divisional Area only lists Infantry Regiments, it's possible that he was attached to one of those regiment's as an instructor, his parent unit would still have been the Royal Artillery.

You've probably got it, but incase you haven't, his medal card can be downloaded from the National Archives for £3.50.

I'm really not sure! ::)

Looking at the resource guide for overseas records on 1837 it says;

Incomplete indices:

Because registration with either the British registering authorities or the armed forces Service Departments is not compulsory, the General Register Office does not receive automatic notification of every birth, marriage or death that happens or has happened.

So I'm a bit stumped as to where you should look next....... ???

Hopefully someone else will know and will be able to advise you.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help,

Mick :)
