There is a village north of London called Shenley.

'Shenley' is Olde English - meaning 'bright or beautiful woodland glade'
Shenley in Buckinghamshire and Shenley in Hertfordshire were both first mentioned in the Doomeday Book of 1086.

Shenley is a village situated 5 miles east of St Albans between the villages of London Colney, Radlett and Ridge. It currently lies in Hertfordshire but was formerly Middlesex. Hope this helps

As far as I am aware, Shenley has always been in Hertfordshire.  The confusion may have arisen because Shenley, as well as some other Hertfordshire locations are sometimes included as part of the Middlesex Census.

Censuses are organised by Registration Districts, which do not neccesarily correspond with county boundaries.
