WOOF (E) in Welshpool
« on: Saturday 27 May 06 05:20 BST (UK) »
My ancestors William and Eleanor WOOF nee Smallman farmed on part of the Llanerchydol estate c 1820 -1875.
On their marriage entry in Munslow Sal. William states from Llanffair.
Trying to find his origins. Census says born 1780 Ludlow or Bitterley but I can't find record of baptism either parish. Any ideas.?

I can't see a baptism yet but I have found his death:

William Woof
Death: December Quarter 1872
Age: 92 (which fits in with his age in the 1871 census)
District: Forden (which covers Castle Caereinion)
Volume: 11b
Page: 157

I can't see anything online so now you will need a look up of the parish registers for Ludlow and Bitterley (at least you can rule them out if he's not there!!).

Copies of the registers are held on microfilm at the Shropshire Archives http://www.shropshire.gov.uk/archives.nsf

It is possible to email them, and they will do a 10 minute look up for free, otherwise there will be a charge.  Alternatively, I could go to the Archives and check it out for you.  I am hoping to go this Friday but I will say that do I have a huge list of look ups to do this time so couldn't promise that I would get to yours.  Sorry :(  I'm not sure yet when I will be able to visit the Archives again.

Thanks Jan
Yes thats my William. Thanks for the Census Info.and death details.
Now I need his birth details and parents.
I think it is the 1851 Census that he stated Bitterley as his birthplace although it wasn't easy to read.(It appears they are missed off the index !!)
Have looked at the Bitterley and Ludlow reg. There is a William HOOF b 1780 Bitterley that I am seriously considering !!
Might get the Shropshire record office to look at the writing too.
The Trow's are on holiday at the moment but will see them next week and check it out.
Hope this all makes sense.
Jan (as well)

Hi other Jan!!

I am now definitely going to the Archives tomorrow, so would you like me to check out William Hoof in Bitterley.  I will add it to my list anyway, and just hope I have enough hours in the day!!!!!!

Thanks for checking out things with the Trow's - wouldn't it be good if they were distant cousins of mine ;)

Hi Jan

Here is exactly what the baptism record showed:

William Corbet son of Ann HOOF baptised Feby 20th 1780.

It is definitely HOOF,  and no way that it could be Woof :'( :'( :'( :'(

Sorry :(
