Link: Prestwich Lunatic Asylum later known as Prestwich Hospital

I came across these two articles from the Prestwich and Whitefield Guide:
www.prestwichandwhitefieldguide.co.uk

Memorial stone for former patients

http://web.archive.org/web/20110310025337/http://www.prestwichandwhitefieldguide.co.uk/news/766113.memorial_stone_for_former_patients

Headstone will mark "forgotten" patients

Apparently, between 1851-1968, 5,000 patients from the above institution were buried in the graveyard of St. Mary's Church, Prestwich without any form of headstone.
But there is now some happy news :)
A memorial to these forgotten patients has now been erected in the form of a five-foot high headstone made of Welsh slate.
Perhaps a photograph of the church and the memorial stone could be posted here on Rootschat since there have been so many questions by members about this place.

If you have a death certificate stating that your family member died at 535, Bury New Road, Prestwich, then this is unfortunately where they died. :'(

The Registration District within which it falls has changed over time:

1837-1874: Manchester
1874-1924: Prestwich
1925-1934: Manchester North
1934-1974: Heywood

It's name has also changed over the years:

1861 Census: County Lunatic Asylum of Prestwich
1871 Census: County Asylum, Prestwich
1881 Census: County Lunatic Asylum
1891 Census: County Lunatic Asylum
1901 Census: County Asylum, Lancashire

1929-1948: Lancashire County Mental Hospital
1949-1994: Prestwich Hospital

currently: Mental Health Services of Salford

A very kind person has made a list of patients from Prestwich Lunatic Asylum who were buried in the graveyard of St. Mary's Prestwich.
All these patients originated from outside the area, hence the title:

"Strays buried at St. Mary's Prestwich"

http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/archive/index.php/index.php/t-8975.html

His kindness in producing this list from the Parish Records is, I am sure, greatly appreciated by the readers of Rootschat.

The above institution should not be confused with the Prestwich Union Workhouse:

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Prestwich

Although both fall within the same Registration Districts, they fall within different Civil Parishes on the Census.

The Asylum lies within the Civil Parish of Prestwich
The Workhouse lies within the Civil Parish of Crumpsall.
The location of the Prestwich Workhouse was the Cleveland Estate off Delauneys Road, Crumpsall.

In 1918 it was renamed Delauney's Road Institution.
Then it became Delauney's Hospital.
Then it became part of North Manchester General Hospital.

Hi UKgirl

After 4 visits to the church I have got your photos.

First trip gates were locked, second trip yesterday morning a wedding was about to start third trip yesterday afternoon "stone the crows another wedding".

Today Prestwich had its carnival but went on the off chance, Prestwich was busy but church was (excuse the pun) dead quite and peaceful. I have taken 12 photos around the church for you.

Here is one of the stone, sorry that line down the center is bird muck, I had nothing to wash it off with, I will when I get some time clean it up with PSPx digitally.

I have sent you a PM for your email address, hope you have Broadband the RAR file is 7.5 meg.

Regards
Ken

Now cleaned and resized and looks much better

As I took this photo, it is copyright free - photo removed as I have made it a copyright item

Hi Annie

in't it just typical I am a Prestwich lad born & bred, but never been to this church, mucked around in St Marys park a few times which is next door. It must be one of these things you get to appreciate only when you start getting older  ;D
Only spent 20 minutes there and the oldest stone I found was dated 1641.

Just noticed your family lines - Howarth any of them from Manchester, doing some work for someone in Canada at the moment on a Howarth family.

If anybody would like to see the 12 photos I took please PM with your email address

Regards
Ken
