'23rd battalion, 104th brigade, 35th division

left salisbury plain on 29th jan 1916, under the command of lt col R V Smith, initial attempt to cross the channel was foiled by mines, eventually crossed on 30th jan to boulogne.

31st jan by train to Blondeques near St Omer for training and machine gun instruction.

11th feb inspection by Lord Kitchener,

18th feb to Boeseghein, 19th feb to Calonne, 20th feb to Le Touret then Richebourg (ST Vaast) for trench instruction until 24th Feb

into front line trenches in the Bethune area from 7th march
