Thomas Pougher - Sapcote
« on: Saturday 10 June 06 13:03 BST (UK) »
Hi!  I'm hoping that someone who is better at this stuff than me can identify more information around my g-g-grandfather, THOMAS POUGHER, born Sapcote c1831.

I have him in the 1861 Census, visiting his wife-to-be (Sarah Grace Sewell, of Welham), at which time he was a policeman; and then running the Willow Tree pub in Willow Road, Leicester, in 1871 and 1875.  He appears to have died by 1881.

Any help in filling the blanks, and especially taking him backwards, would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Peter

Thanks, this looks very likely.  Stoney Stanton is about a mile from Sapcote, and given that the wife of the household is also from Sapcote...

And looking at the original record, the 'a' might be a deformed 'o'.  Can't think why the 'fuzzy spelling' feature failed to find it.  But there's no 'Paugher' in the 1841 Census - sad!

It would be great if you or anyone else can take him further back.

Sorry for the delay in responding after your rapid reply.  Got distracted by some football match or other.

Peter

This Thomas is too young but it shows there were Poughers in Sapcote in 1841

1841 census HO107 603/1 folio 18 page 31
Sapcote  Leicestershire
Thomas Pougher 35  Leicestershire Shoe m.
Rebecca Pougher 35  Leicestershire
Thomas Pougher 7  Leicestershire
Abraham Pougher 1  Leicestershire

The census enumerator then loses it completely for this family in 1851 and they are recorded as Puffers. They re-emerge as Paughers in 1861. It shows how far you have to be prepared to go to find a Pougher on a census. The younger Thomas is with his family on all three censuses so he is not your man.

On the Puffer/Pougher principle we have now established for census searching - how about this family on the 1841 census for your Thomas?

HO107 603/1 folio 15 page 15
Sapcote  Leicestershire
Samuel Proffer 40  Leicestershire Ag lab
Jane Proffer 35  Leicestershire
Elizabeth Proffer 12  Leicestershire
Thomas Proffer 11  Leicestershire
Anne Proffer 6  Leicestershire
Louisa Proffer 10 mths  Leicestershire
they are next door to even more Puffers

and if you keep the faith here are the Proffers metamorphising into the Poughers in 1851 minus of course Thomas.

1851 census HO107 2082 folio 34
Sapcote  Leicestershire
Samuel Pougher 50 Sapcote, Leicestershire,  Head Married labourer
Jane Pougher 47 Sapcote, Leicestershire, Wife  Married
Elizth Pougher 23  Sapcote, Leicestershire, Daughter  Stocking weaver
Ann Pougher 16  Sapcote, Leicestershire, Daughter
Louisa Pougher 11  Sapcote, Leicestershire, Daughter

The census enumerators were obviously having a lot of difficulty with the local accent and a reasonably rare surname which they had never come across before. So hidden somewhere in Sapcote there are probably quite a few Poughers on the censuses.

The family is still in Sapcote in 1861 but Samuel has changed his mind about his place of birth - South Kilworth circa 1797. By 1871 he is back to being born in Sapcote.

Regards

Valda

Valda/Mike:

Thanks for this stuff.  The logic of Valda's 1841 Proffers is very strong, as it ties so closely to the 1851 census in terms of given names and ages, with my g-g-gf in service down the road in Stoney Stanton.

I agree with the 'rarity of the name' thought; the name is pronounced 'Puffer' anyway.  Not a difficult leap to 'Proffer', in days of far from 100% literacy!

Mike - I think I have Thomas Poughes as Pougher in the 1881 Census, as a retired Shoemaker living in an Alms House.  My Thomas Pougher's wife is listed as Head of Household by 1881, which suggets he was dead rather than separated and living in poverty.  Equally, no other recod of my Thomas being a shoemaker.

Thus I like your Proffers, in line with Valda's thoughts.

Interested in the burial information as well, and I'll digest this at leisure in the next couple of days.  Although, in 1875 my Thomas was running a pub near Filbert Street, and in the 1881 Census his widow is living on Humberstone Road.  Not sure he'd have been buried in Sapcote, unless it was normal to be planted back where you came from.

My sincere thanks for your help in this.  You may well see other requests of mine appear in this group in future, as I run out of ideas in some of my other 'chains'.  So far they're virtually all in Leics (occasionally straying into Rutland & Lincs).

Thomas's son Arthur Dick Pougher was, incidentally, a professional cricketer for the County, MCC and England.

Thanks again,

Peter

I appreciate this conversation is old however I thought you might be interested in the below from my Pougher family research if you are still viewing this post.

Incidentally Pougher is pronounced Power, or has been throughout this century in our family.

Census information. 1871 was living in 91 Willow St Leicester with family, wife Sarah, son Samuel and daughter Martha and a servant called Ernest Church who appears to have been 16. No mention of children Emma or George on the census, who are sourced from Great Grandpa Poughers family tree. Equally this part of the tree appears vague, but no mention of Samuel or Martha on his tree. The census is for the only Thomas Pougher listed however and as his wife is Sarah, he has the family trade and was born in Sapcote which is correct I have to assume this is the correct Thomas Pougher.
On the 1861 census Thomas is listed as a policeman and a visitor to Market Harborough staying with Samuel Sewell or Jewell who was 54 and the owner of 20acres was his given profession. Living with the family was Jewells daughter Sarah who was 27 to Thomas's 29 and a dress maker. Was Sarah Thomas's future wife, and did Pop Pougher get her maiden name wrong?
